I've read a bunch of "reviews" online where people say their texas cichlids are actually kind of nice. I always thought they were mean as hell. What everyone else's experience? And what have you successfully kept them with?

PS- I think they're talking about regular texans, NOT red texans.

Each individual has a different attitude. Some are nice and some are mean. I had one that was mean and would not tolerate tankmates.

mine is a juvenile still, but still has the stones to stand up to the bigger dempsey and paratilapia polleni

i agree. each fish has its own personality but i think this rule applies to texas more then any other cichlid. most fish you kinda catergorize as kinda on the mean side or kinda on the nice side but with the texas it truly is hit or miss with there attitude. ive had super peaceful ones and ive had bastards.

i have one that kills everything. lil bastard even flarred its gills at me and started ramming into the tank like he wanted to bite me.

Those of you with aggressive texans, did you buy them young and raise them, or get them at an older, larger size? I wonder if it has anything to do with that.

The big one I have now is king of the tank, beats on the Flowerhorn pretty bad. First time Ive had an evil Texas, seems to be protect the snook I bought it with, all the others have been chill. Probably why it was dropped off in a bucket at the LFS.

They like to start a lot of fights they can't finish, and depending on your tank mates you'll usually wind up with a dead texas sooner or later.

this is the truth, iv bred texans for a while a few years ago and they wouls always starting fights and not being so tough lol, never had any die on me but iv seen a few get beat up in big tank set ups.
my flowerhorn and mag ran my large tanks .
