are the marks on there faces normal???

No this is not normal and not really all that good...Could you add some details on what you feed, what your water parameters are and frequency of water changes?

What you have going on with your fish is kind of the gar equivalent of "Lateral line (sensory pore) erosion".. This is usually easier to prevent than cure but it can be reduced some. This is a common problem in Public aquarium gars that is oddly not so common in the home aquarium. Often feeding is directly related it is not however the only cause.

i thought that was odd looking as well, but never saw it on a gar before.

now im pissed and scared lost too many fish this year what do i do?? polyterus you got PM...

Sent ya back a PM... I would not freak out over it as it is unlikely to be fatal to the fish once under control.

forgot to tell you i feed shrimp and pellets... thanks again

You may want to soak the shrimp in a solution of mutivitamins such as Kent Zoe. This can not hurt and may be benificial. This has been proved to be an effective way to reduce this problem in many cases.

now that i got my shortnose eating i will be trying this, to see if it helps at all with the gill curl. you might as well try it on the tropical and see what happens. it seems as though they are lacking somewhere in there diet.

ill try that... didnt make it to lfs today to get the tetracylene so tomarrow ill get the zoe and the meds.... not looking forward to netting and moving these guys again... they dont like it and im afraid they will hurt them selves badly
