THAT New Tank FEELING ^^

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My sump is the same as well, first compartment filled with bio balls with a layer of white filter on top of it, 2nd compartment ceramic noodles, 3nd compartment more ceramic noodles 4th pump.
Also put an AC/DC air pump with stones in the 2nd and 3rd compartments if you have a power out for more than a few hours your boi will turn toxic, the pump will come back on when the power is back on and pump all the toxins into the tank.

Here’s the link, I never bothered with building this. It would be easy in a dry tank with no fish and you could hide it with a corner box made of black plastic. My tank was up and running when I found, or was given this.

Good luck my man and get some filter material in your sump, it should be ok IMHO for the size or the tank although I read the general rule of thumb is one third the volume of your tank. I’m sure some one will correct me if I’m wrong.

Thanks for the input classic-chassis. I have seen the thread that you mentioned. I don't see any reason for having the pipe go all the way down just to come back up again. What i am gonna do with mine is just make it go down 10cm below the surface to be fully submerged - that should take care of the gurgling sound with the pump running full speed. At the moment the pump is running at half capacity in order not to draw the water too fast. Having the pipe pointing downward but not all the way should take care of draining the entire aquarium in the event of power failure.

Hmmm, good point about AC/DC airpump for the sump. i was wondering about that. though i wonder if the air flow will stir up too much gunk in the filter ... in any case, i have a AC/DC in the sump of my original 8' in its own comparment.

All of my tank have at least one AC/DC pump (rated for 17 hours). I have a converter that can be plugged into car lighter hole that can also generate electricity 220V. I have alrady procured truck batteries which i am going to covert to back-up power and connected to AC - i have seen a set-up at one place that can automatically switch to backup battery in the event of power failure (and when the power is normal it charges itself). Will post the battery set-up once it is up and running.

Hmmmmm, i was thinking about ceramic rings ... i think i will get some as well :D i am going to udonthani this weekend (you would not happened to be there, ey?)

cool looking stand.
Something different from wahat im use to

Thans :D as u can see there was a design flaw. Initially, the stand came with the lower part made up of those small planks ... nowhere near strong enough to support the sump + plus the clearance was too small. I had to cut out half of the planks in order to fit in the sump

I don;'t recon that sump must be 1/3 of the volume of tank. If you can, sure, but certainly not compulsory for large tank. My current filter in existing 8' is way less than 1/3 and the water readings so far are all ok. It is true that the bioload is not particularly heavy for 8' (2 juvi aros with juvi L600 and bichir). My 7' tank with heavy bioload (silver aros, jar, green and ray) also does not have 1/3 of the tank filter.

Certainly if the new set-up works out good. i will drill some of my tank and put in 1/3 sump :D

that means should your pump stop for any reason your tank will drain 10cm of water. The next question you need to answer or test, is your sump big enough to hold the volume of 10cm of water?

I'm currently asking questions in the below thread that you may find interesting regarding "gunk". It doesn't happen in mine, but don't take this the wrong way, my sump is set up neatly and the air stones are under the bags of noodles. There was a bit of "gunk" pushed into the tank but it soon goes away.

Very technical but interesting.
I'll take some pictures of my sump and out let T bar above the bio balls as described in the above thread for you, it's better than an open pipe pouring into one spot continually.

that's interesting, mine are only rated for 5 hours so please share brand and model number mate.

Sorry mate I'm in Bangkok, if you ever come here let me know and we can go look round Chatuchak market. I've never been to Udonthani, only Ubonratchathani, (still near the border of Loa.)
Where are you in Loa?
Found a picture in "myset up" thread.

From the side, i've got load more noodle bags in now. I change the white filter stuff every month because it starts to smell.
It sits on a drip try which is removable but it sits on glass shelves just above the bio balls.
TBH if i did it again i would have made the sump the same length as the tank with the bio ball chamber higher than the rest of the sump. I would have had more compartments and a space in between each compartment for a piece of japanese matt.
I saw one picture on here of a sump as described and it is the best i've ever seen.
I'll try and find it again.

No, it is not. But it is not an issue since this tank is outdoor :D. that's how i intend to change water in the tank. Switch off the pump and let the water just spill over the sump. Then close the valve in the pump outlet and fill-in the tank.

Thanx for the info. I will put in the airstones into sumps for sure. Gunk does not bother me as long as it stays in the sump. will check out the thread though

I will take the picture of my AC/DC pump. It is about 1300 THB. Never tried it out though for it is claimed capacity. Like i said before i will beef up my back-up system with truck batteries and my final ultimate last resort is coverter for car (tested it out and it works quite well) :D the power outages are quite infrequent now and when they do happen they are not that long - though never hurts to be ready

I live in the capital city Vientiane, which is less than one hour drive to Udonthani. Sure if i am in BKK next time, will PM ya to look around Chatuchak hehhehehe i did not fully explored it yet. I assume you have been to Siam Paragon aquarium already - not bad amazonian set-up :D:D:D

Yeah, i guess i am going to go and get some ceramic noodle things ^^ I would have done the same thing - longer sump as well - oh well next time

After some time they are finally here :D:D:D but who?

Gotta love that new fish feeling ^^
