That Pond Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well, the koi is a great idea, but IMHO, i think you should sell off or move what current stock you have and put in some large central americans that can handle "cooler weather" more tolerably (68-72F) in case of heater malfunction. I'd go with some oscars, some jags, vieja sps. and some jack dempseys to round it out.

I agree with this guy... plus, you'll only be able to fit 3 decent size koi in 800 gallons.

If you like koi, you like koi tho. I'd rather have 3-4 massive koi than the fish you just mentioned for example. Hm, I always thought Koi could go much colder than that. In Scotland people have ponds that freeze over in winter, the keepers usually just drill a hole in the ice and put in a line to blow bubbles into the pond. Given, you need about 7feet depth up here to allow them to get down low enough. They just sort of sit there in hibernation then spring comes round their up at the top again.

am not a huge koi fan. i love catfish! so am just thinking i could have a nice gold koi as the center. and there more slow moving? i hope. cause they only thing i really want active in there, are the silver dollers. so the pond has diffrent "moods"

Koi can live in waters up to 20 degrees, but their body goes into hibernation so to speak.. Many people keep their koi outside all year long in the states here, and we get snow, and it freezes over etc... but yeah, just got to keep a hole in the ice.

If you want a pond with different "moods" then you shouldn't throw a koi into the mix because they will be the most active in your pond, and there are not many things that koi should be mixed with...

Things they can go with:

Catfish (NOT tropical cats)
Plecos- common (but will need to be taken out in winter or will die)
Sturgeons- (they can get LARGE)
Chinese high fin banded sharks
Goldfish ( this is not recommended, because they are non showing carriers of KHV)

tadpoles
turtles (if the koi are large)
frogs

NO CICHLIDS OR TROPICALS!!!!
