So I was talking with a LFS guy and the conversation turned to feeder fish.

I said I don't trust feeder fish (except for those I breed myself) and that earth worms are better food for fish like my eel and ray, seem to fatten them up fast. Besides, never had a fish that didn't like earth worms.;)

LFS guy said to me that earth worms are terrible to feed fish because the worm mucus will plug them up and be really hard for the fish to pass. :screwy:

This made me laugh  , but the guy was serious.

Ever heard of earth worms giving a fish constipation (not counting algae grazing African cichlids)?

I seem to have the opposite problem. When I feed my rays nightcrawlers, I definately got a mess of nasty crap to clean up before long.:screwy:

You know this guy seems to know his stuff, generally speaking. I really thought he was joking at first because I've never heard him give bad advice, he's even denied selling fish if the person wanting it doesn't have the right tank for it.

But here he was, dead serious that worms are bad for fish. And also trying to convince me that since the guppies and goldies in the store were "pond raised" they are safe. (WTF, don't all fish farms "pond raise" feeders?)

Can't say much about this but I'd still be wary regardless of the source. We often see anchorworms and other external parasites in the ponds more than in the tanks.

thats a new one to me, earthworms and bad for fish just dont go in the same sentence IMO

Well think of the mess you'd have if you ate the worms...'nuff said?

Only worms bad for a fish were on the end of my hook :D.

There's a vendor on here that sells worms (worm farm) and several of our ray guys use him regularly.

I raise my own worms and you can go thru a purging process for the worms if you don't want to have all the dirt in your tank too.

Never had a problem with feeding worms to native fish tho.

I'm not saying he didn't have problems with this just that I didn't (don't know his circumstances).
