That's just not right

I'm not saying that Alex is wrong, I said he should read all of the post. I wasn't saying they prefer gravel, I said I have kept mine on pea gravel since I got it.

Mine has been known to move enough pea gravel to fill the bottom of a 1 gallon milk jug, over an inch deep, in under two hours, one mouthful at a time. I'd hate to see how much sand it could move...........

Have you ever seen a dust storm on the open plains? Imagine that underwater. He doesn't use his mouth as much as his tail to sweep large amounts of sand into the water, usually when redoing his hideout.

thanks i will add more caves,at the mo he has got two,and im going to lower the salt as it seems it has worked for you,the tank is a 4*2 and he has got the whole of the bottom to his self,im hoping by lowering the salt it will slow down hes metabolism so he can conserve more energy

Danny,
I don't think lowering the salt will lower its metabolism. I would think you need to raise its metabolism, and that should increase its appetite. And if you are lowering the salt content, do it slowly.
Mine has decided that it doesn't have enough caves..... it digs a new one out everyday while I'm at work, and I fill it back in when I get home....... It is amazing at times how much gravel they can move! And if its not digging caves, its swimming around with an algie wafer in its mouth, munching on it like its deep in thought.
Anyway, keep me updated on yours...........

lowering the salt will lower his metabolism but not hes appetite(i hope) im hoping he will save energy by not having to work so hard to diffuse the salt out of his system.it been 3 days now since i lowered the salt from 0.006 to 0.004 and he looks a bit calmer,,,,sorry i did not say befor he has always been very active

My 1st one was kept in FW. After a few years, it grew pink tumors on it's body. It lived to ~8 years & eventually died when a tumor developed in it's mouth, rendering it unable to eat. I definately believe this was due to keeping it in FW, which will weaken the immune system of a BW fish.
