When you ray keepers are feeding bulky frozen foods, say shrimp for example, do you guys just toss it straight from the freezer into the tank and let the aquarium water take care of the thawing, or do you make sure the food is thawed well first?

I was just wondering if a frozen chunk of something made it to the bottom of the tank and wasn't fully thawed yet, still frozen in the middle say, if that could be harmful if the rays ate it?

no need to thaw it just throw it in

I thaw shrimp, fillet, etc before I give them to any of my fish. No rays for me, but I do have some hungry kittie fish that will gobble it as soon as it hits the tank. I would think that causes some type of brain freeze feeling, but not sure. Bloodworms, mysis, and krill I don't defrost as it doesn't take long in the tank.

Yeah, obviously blood worm and the like I wouldn't worry about, I was thinking more along the lines of shrimp, chopped fish fillet, etc.

Thanks T1KARMAAN, good to know.

i have always thawed everything

i would say frozen is ok as long as u feed them semi slowly. if they ate like 10 full frozen shrimp they might throw them back up...

I thaw everything as well. I put the frozen food in a small bowl and turn the faucet on warm and let the bowl just overflow. Food is thawed in just a couple of minutes or less. I use scissors to cut it up into smaller pieces for the smaller rays. Sure beats using a knife.

i actually use cold water to thaw out tilapia. if you thaw out food with warm water im pretty sure it goes bad. so if its in sealed bags use a bowl of cold water to thaw and if its open keep running fresh cold water over it to thaw so it wont spoil. this sounds weird i know but it takes about the same amount of time as warm water does. and its the correct way to thaw out frozen fish for human consumption.

thats what i do if im cutting for future use anyway. after cuts i seperate into baggies then put back in the freezer. then i get some out enough for about 2-3 days and put it in the fridge and keep doing this until i need to cut more up. this way im not constantly cutting every day and get this done at one time. this also protects the frozen stuff from being constantly opened up and exposed to oxygen and then getting freezer burn.

humans have brain freeze to actually protect the body and organs. i would think fish do not have this happen but i guess i could be wrong.
