Does anyone know what upgrades/improvements the 05' Fluvals have from the 04's? From the diagram i saw, the media placement and internals look the same so im guessing it has something to do with the impeller/motor/operating system of it.

Ive only seen pics, I think theres improvments in the retaining clips, I think the Aqua stop is no more. they look a lil bigger to.

I saw the FX at my LFS over the weekend and from I understand one of the new features is a microchip which automates self cleaning of the unit. The salesperson also claimed the same chip also performs water changes when the unit deams it necessary, it even comes with a CD ROM has a manual....also it retails for 399.99

still have the aquastop, better priming/startup though. also supposed to have much better intake strainer (finally). i have seen a 205 on display at 2 petcos, but none for sale. i work at a pet shop and we can get in the FX5, but not the 05s yet. i googled fluval 405 and ended up at the hagen website that has a one page summary of both (the 05s and the FX5) and that lists the new changes. from what i read the FX5 doesnt do your water changes, but has valves so that it is pumping the water out, i dont know if it takes it in through that valve though.

I figured as much.....sounded to good to be true

maybe I can help with the questions - I have my Fx5 setup for about a week now with a 220. The electronics are for purging the air that builds up over a 24 hour time frame. It will shut down for two minutes, and restart and purge the built up air out. Also when it first powers up it runs for a few mintures shuts off and then goes back on. The nice feature is that it can empty your tank, just by attaching an extra quick disconnect nozzle to your output and route that to your sink or window. The tank will empty pretty quickly - did a 50% in about 15- 20 mins (or less forgot to time it).

The canister holds about 2 gallons of water ( for priming) it has a drain valve on bottom in case you need to drain before moving. The media baskets are huge and stack on top of each other - you can use anything you want in there as long as they are bagged. The can itself is of a impact resistant plastic - it is similiar in looks to a smaller shop-vac. I find it very well made and can find no area of complaint....it was very well thought out, down to the clamps that hold the intake and exhaust nozzles (top notch) If you got big fish these will be pretty safe and secure from big fish moving them.....it was designed for it to be serviced fast, and it shows. It of course has lots of power through the heads -which angle seperately from each other for great agitation and circulation. The tank has been clear as a bell from day one....The costs range from low Internet prices to about $300. I dont know of anything that offers better or more for the price and features. They did their homework and priced it to take market share away from the others no doubt....IMHO

I hope this helps
