My 12" RES has been in there since it's been filled "testing" it. the sides above rocks top are about 12" high... plus there's the flat wall behind where the top of the rock comes near the top of the tank, so unless they're capabable of launching themselves OUT of the water like some sort of acrobatic penguin I don't think I have to worry about escapees.
Current filtration is a 400gph powerhead attached to a 5-gal bucket that's filled with gravel, bio media, and polyester fiber nicely hidden and set up as the "stand" for the flat square rock in the picture. Building another "bucket filter" this weekend.
