the 2011 lake sturgeon count thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im pretty sure i caught your thread last year...
remind me where you are located again?
obviously you are tossing them back, but are they legal to keep, or is it catch and release fishing only?

i am in MN on the middle part of the st. crouix. in sept or oct it is a week long catch and release season with a week long season to keep(2 weeks total). you can only keep 1 per year and they have to be 60" to keep. you also have to have a pre bought tag to do it.

Lake sturgeon are decreasing in numbers im sure everywhere. here the numbers have dropped 80% but i've still managed to accidently catch two beasts, the first one was 47" long and the second was around 60"

they are not decreasing here. they are spawning, with a high survival rate. this population is making an amazing recovery! the dnr have tagged some 500+ fish in the last few years and my group has landed a group total pushing 1000 fish and we have only caught 2 fish that were tagged. we also have helped the dnr tag 3 fish in the 10-15" range and thats the smallest fish that they have ever tagged. sizes from 6-8" on up to 53" and one not measured, due to the distance to the truck being to far, at over 60". the average population for my section is 24-36" with a very high population density of breeder fish(over 50") aswell as young fish in the 8-15". with in the next 10-20yrs when all the average sized fish and young fish grow to maturity the population will get exponential, not to mention the fact that all my average fish will be in the 50"+ range with 60-70" fish more common. a 72" fish was caught and released at this spot already so i am not just talking out my ***.

i got out last night and got 2 more! both were 26" got pics of one, but there on my friends phone so i have to get him to send them to me to put them up.

2x 26" lake sturgeons

this years total is at 12 now!

thanks, this video we got is a common occurance for us. we just happened to have my brother with his phone to record a vid. this part of the river is amazing, it is moderatly currented with steep cliffs on either side. it is a nice sand bttom with a few rocks and trees. also we are just on the channel edge so it is the pirfict textbook spot. i just can't get enough of it. i will be going out again on monday to hopfully get some more. we'll see though.

very cool, only native fish I have yet to catch!

thanks, they are easy to pattern. just find a river that has a population around you. then find a dam to fish below. if you don't get any at that dam try the next dam down stream and you'll find some. just be sure it is a clean river because they can't take pollution to well. this river by me is full of them. if your ever over here in MN give my a shout and i'll hook you up.

Awesome, thanks for sharing!

thanks, i love these fish and most of the average fisherman don't get to see them. it's a shame because these fish are a whole new level of monster that is right in peoples back yards and they don't even know it.

i never would have though i could catch a 6' fish after a 20min drive since i live in the middle of the contry.
