The addiction has started....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have also seen endlicheri, ansorgii, palmas polli, and mokelembembe

Mike,
Thanks man I actually just bought a bichir there 2 days ago! haha thats an AWESOME LFS, the staff is awesome, and the fish are so damn well kept!

I purchased what was labelled a "Koliba bichir", which if i did my research is a lap. I don't know that I've heard of the name koliba before but then again I'm new to the bichir world haha. Pretty cool little guy! says he only gets in the upwards of 18-20"....lets hope thats true/that he isnt a mislabeled giant haha.

I guesstimated his size between 4-5"....but he very well may be pushing 5.5-6".

When I get home I will take a pic and let MFK decide haha. I just got him cause he was the smaller of all the ones there and I needed a comparable size for my sen. regardless of what he is, hes pretty cool

My first bichir was an ornate. I got it about 2 months ago at about 6". It is getting closer to 8" now I would suspect and has really put on some meat. Right now I have a 55 gal, but I hope i can upgrade and get a 200 gallon+ sometime in the near future. Other tank mates include: 5 clown loaches, 5 rosey barbs, a shovel nose cat, a fire eel (similar size lengthwise to ornate but nowhere near as bulky and a much pickier eater), a ghost knife who is also about 7-8" now, 2 plecos (one is a blue panaque, the other a chocolate), 3 Raphael cats (3" now), and an oscar (4"). I will be hard pressed for space relatively soon! Can you keep more than one bichir together? I heard they were not compatible with others? If I do get a 200 gal tank i plan to add an arowana or 2 and possibly some more fire eels (though I also hear these dont get along either).

that 55 is dangerously close to overstocked as is even with the fish being smaller. that fire eel is goin to outgrow everything in that tank lol they get massive. Even with a 200gal I wouldnt add 1 arowana let alone 2 ever. 200 gals would be pushing it for all of those fish in one area. the ornate is going to get big, those loaches will get big, and that knife is already pretty big haha. bichirs get along providing they dont fit in eachothers mouths (This is all what I've been told, I'm new to bichirs, but my two are getting along just fine, not even a fin nip) There will be some aggression issues with your tank even in the upgrade I would venture to guess.

U should go ahead and ditch the oscar and shovel nose that oscar will kill most of what in your tank in about a month in a half he will be double the soze he is now .. And that catfish will get very very big and sooner rather than later will prob eat most things in your tank that fire eel gets way to big especially to b put wit that many fish in that size tank ... Only 1 aro bro ... And like guy above sai I wouldn't even keep one if a 200 is hat u goin to u need steady 300 gal tank key word is (at least)

and even then, 1 and maybe a few other medium size fish. Aros arent just "chuck it in a big tank and leave it alone" type of fish.

I may get rid of the oscar, he is definitely territorial. I thought of the South American cichlids, the oscar tended to be less aggressive. In the tank he doesn't seem to bother anyone, the worst i have seen is him nip at the ghost knife when he wanted to get in on the food action. I have watched an online tutorial about building a custom acrylic tank. The process didnt seem that bad so I may go that route and build a mammoth 500 gallon tank. I would consider buying a large tank, but not many in the nebraska Kansas area for sale in that size range. I have really enjoyed this 55 gallon venture, i watch these fish for up to an hour a session . What would you guys recommend?

well I say if you are going to spend the money, and its gonna be a lot since acrylic has gone up lol, build your own tank. more gallons/$ and the sense of satisfaction of building your own tank. 500 gals would be good for your current stock minus maybe the oscar and the shovelnose. it would more than accomodate your bichirs, knife, eel, plecos and the 3 raphs. if you go the 200 gal tank, youre still ditching the oscar and shovelnose, and the eel at that point. thats just my thought I prefer understocked with a few prized fish versus pushing the limits of a tank. I would have that 500 gal with like 5 bichir and a gar or something haha

Pfff heck with that if I had a 500 gal id have at least 20-30 bichirs a huge aro and probly 2-3 gars and a bowfin lol
