We purchased 2 red festae from a LFS and from previous post everyone knows about how sick they were. Well I have never had a breed of cichlid with such a strong will to live. One of them was at deaths door step more than once but I am proud to say they are both 100% healthy now :headbang2 . They are both healthy and well we bought a male and female or so we though instead we have two gorgeous females. After caring for these fish and having to hand feed them for a week I have fully fallen in love with red festae. As a matter of fact we were at a very well known fish store a few days ago and saw a 9" female festae that looked like it had not been fed in months. She was beat up and skinny. So we bought her gave her her very own 75gal and are going to get weight back on her. Once healthy she will be in a show tank with a few other SA/CA's. Here are pics of her...

Congrats on your pick up and hopefully it will eat and come around for you. But i must say that this looks like a male.....At 8" females should be showing plenty of orange, yellows, and reds. And if this is a male then your in luck and will get a chance a trying to pair him out with one of your females:) Good luck and cant wait to see them once they fully recover.

Thank you and it is eating like a champ it is now sharing its 75 with one of the females and there has been no aggression but rather interest in each other but if they do not ever pair up they will be tankmates with a green terror, a jag and a few random SA/CA fry that we are over ran with in a 180gal.

I must say I think your enthusiasm is refreshing. I wish you the best of luck, this one deserves to be brought back!

Very nice score! Hopefully there aren't any internal parasite issues, just malnutrition. NLS Thera A would probably help this guy out a lot with its excellent garlic content. I really hope he pulls through. This would make for a great comeback story! Good luck!

I believe that every creature deserve a real chance at life and we have the tanks to offer a lot of fish a nice comfy home. We are actually in the market for a 200+ gallon tank lol. This large male is really friendly and really likes the idea of being fed twice a day. He has already figured out when it is feeding time he splashes water out of the tank to let us know. It there a way to get a rough estimate of age when it comes to Festae?

Some people will post their suggestions but it is honestly a crapshoot. I say that because some people do not have good water quality perams, a quality diet etc.. So age is tough to determine against size alone without knowing who has cared for it. Based on the condition it currently is in I would say it's had a rough life/the last year at least. festae are very slow growers in general (with the exception of dominent males IMO).
