Here is a detailed video demonstration of how Tidal works.

There are several design features in Tidal that is an improvement over AC. First, the in tank submersible motor allows Tidal to self prime even if the box is empty. Second, the by pass chamber with an indicator and drip hole when the foam is clogged up. AC has no by pass and will just pop the foam up, unsightly and can potential drip water over into the floor.

If you plan to use a variety of media like carbon, Purigen, peat or bio matrix, the AC/Tidal style HOB is great because of the large media volume. However, I only use HOBs for mechanical, so I prefer the cartridge style which I can quickly slide off and dispose of like diapers. I don't like rinsing pooped up foam. No, I don't buy the expensive cartridges but cut my own filter pads from polyester batting for 5c each. Judging from the small flow through cross sectional area of AC/Tidal media, they don't hold much mechanical filtration capacity.

I have aquaclear filters still running since 1978 ( Currently running 15+). In all that time I replaced one O ring. Never heard of the Seachem Tidal 110 and don't really care. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. LOL!

What do you mean the AC 110 cant adjust the intake tube? You just get another section of tube and stick it over the first one if you need it to be deeper. And if its to deep to begin with maybe the filter is to big for that tank?

I have 2 AC110’s on my 120 and a fluval fx4 and i have the AC’s set to 2 different depths.

I have them side by side on a 55. To me it looks like the aquaclear dumps more water. The tidal also makes alot of noise if the water level drops, with the aquaclear I can drain half of the tank and keep the ac running. The blue bypass button on the tidal has never popped up either.

Let’s see how it does in the long run. Aquaclears are famous for lasting forever. To me a good reputation is better than specs on paper. I voted for AC

I don't know about the smaller AC's as I haven't used one in many years, but my old school 500's have never failed to restart after a power outage.

I also voted for AC.

Have you tried cleaning the impeller, or the impeller shaft, or in worst case scenario changing them out? That usually does the trick.

Well ive never considered the ACs to be quiet filters. But they have always outperformed the quieter ones on the market by a wide margin and they are certainly passable in noise. i have three of them and its really only one that is intolerable. Ive cleaned it, lubed it several times but its always a grindy mf'er. Still works perfectly fine so for now its my garage tank filter.
