small mouths are monsters and pound for pound way better fighers and much more scrappy than LMB. They just carry a little more prestige with them as well I think since they are not stocked in every body of water in the world.

Smallmouth are so much more agressive than LMB that I almost freaked when I saw that the poll results. I wonder if the LMB voters have EVER really dealt with a SMB? I had 8 bass (7 LMB & 1 SMB) that I put into my farm pond close to a decade ago. They were all roughly in the 8" - 10" at the time. The one SMB was SO dominant over the seven LMB that it is disturbing to see this.

The LMB are about the LAZIEST big predator fish in N. America for pete's sake, hence the LARGE MOUTH that allows this predator to "Suck/ inhale" its prey with FAR less swim movement. The SMB needs to hunt with out of control agression, speed and fury! They prowl/ hunt constantly, where the LMB stay stationary waiting for a fish to swim close enough to it's large mouth to "gulp".

Seriously, Any owners of BOTH species (LMB & SMB) that have kept these fish together in monster aquariums or ponds, please chime in and HONESTLY answer some questions regarding the comparison between the two fish:

1. Which species was more active (swimming etc..) in tank/ pond setup?
2. Which species was the more agressive predator of live prey?
3. Which species (Assuming roughly equal size) was dominant in the setup?
4. Which monster was "meaner"?
5. Which species claimed the "larger" area as their own?
6. Which species generally won "fights"?

I know this is really old but I came upping it and it described what I have.
I have a largemouth and a smallmouth both same size and age.
1. The smallmouth is defiantly more active in the tank, he is always swimming vs the largemouth who is always just hiding under my driftwood.
2. They are both pretty aggressive towards live prey but when I put minnows in for them to eat the smallmouth eats about 5 before the largemouth has one. The smallmouth once ate 11 shiners about 3 inches in length in a row.
3. The small mouth is more dominant but they do go back and forth chasing each other.
4. Neither of them are very "mean" there just bass and they chase and nudge each other.
5. This question was kinda funny because they actually hangout in the same spot.
6. They don't really fight that much. Sometimes the smallmouth will chase the largemouth then the largemouth just gives up and like rolls over like he surrenders.

When it comes down to north american bass, I love stripers but I also love largemouth.

White Bass all the way! :headbang2

The 16" White Bass I caught the other day fought just as hard as the 17" Smallie I caught at the beginning of the year. As far as black bass go, SMBs are my favorite.

I have had all 3 together in my tanks. LMB,SMB,&SPOTTED BASS. In my opinion sm & spots are about equal in nasty behavior. A largemouth is bigger and lazier. I fish tournaments and 99% of the guys I fish with target LMB because of large size. They get that big by using that big mouth to their advantage. Just remember SMB aren't LMB. Completely different habits. Smallmouth swim almost constantly. They also don't school by size like LMB. You can pull up on a point to fish, catch a 12" Brown fish ,then a 23" 7lber on the next cast. If I had to pick the meanest one at 6" in the same tank, I'd go with Micropterus punctalatus. Spotted bass. Hope I spelled the species right. From memory.
