Okay, so I bought one of these for his cute little lizard head and puppy dog behavior. I didn't know at the moment that he grew so big, however, he is in an appropriate sized tank (70 gallons) with fish who can live with him... I would 1. Like name suggestions and 2. Need help in finding a more staple of a diet because I do not believe he can live on bloodworms... He is living with two mollies, a tiger barb, two snails, and 10 ghost shrimp. I do not know if this is appropriate, however, I will correct it if it is not. Any suggestions are apreciated, and if bloodworms can be a staple on his diet, tell me! Thank you!:feedback:

i have 2. one is in a 125 gal with larger fish. he's 7 inches and as fat as a hotdog. he eats shrimp pellets, and cut up silversides. he lives with a arowana, 2 oscars and a florida gar, tire track eel and a big common pleco. the other is in a 55 gal and is only 4 inches and young. he eats bloodworms and shrimp pellets. he lives with a peacock eel and a clown, royal and black ghost knife. i also have a crayfish in the tank.

Thanks, he's doing really well at the moment and he seems pretty active... He sometimes sits there and just like... stares at me LOL... He's funny when he goes up and gets lazy, he lets his head fall down and he just goes down like a plane lol... I really wanted him, I think he is the coolest little thing...

Hi Frogki! You can find tons of bichir info in the polypterid subforum here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=108. Good luck with your new fish! Oh, and keep an eye on his tankmates; your bichir will eat them if he is big enough, with the ghost shrimp being most vulnerable.
yep, he will devour your other fish . . . if they fit in his mouth.

I know that, but he is small right now, I'll try to get another tank for the others since they can live in a smaller tank as soon as possible...
IDK, the ghost shrimp are fine right now, and they didn't cost a lot, so IDC really if he eats them, I mean I do but I don't... Anyway, I'll keep an eye on him and keep reading up...

Be sure to go through the ID key in the polypterid section. There is a lot of size variation among the species. If your fish was just sold as "bichir" he is probably P. senegalus or P. palmas, but there is an off chance you could have gotten one of the tank-busters.

Thanks, I am not worried at the moment... I'll post pictures soon, he really is cool... IDK whether he IS one of the tank busters though, he was sold at the size he is now and they'd had him for a few weeks, so IDK how much bigger he will grow... I am hoping to either keep him if he can be kept with the fish I plan on getting, or, giving him to someone with the appropriate tank set up, or, maybe just keeping him singly...

It's probably a senegalus, which will get about 12" max.

Any type of sinking pellet should work fine, omega one shrimp pellets are good for smaller ones and you can get larger sized sinking cichlid pellets as well.
