I'd shoot f9 at 1/60 if you're shooting with SB-600 off camera, ISO400. Don't need shutter 1/220 unless your shooting low light, even that 1/160 should stop them usually. Good Luck! But if you want background black F22 will work. I love the pics, shoot in RAW then you can tweak them more.

Ps: to turn on auto focus just switch lens to MA, if its a AF or AF-D, switch to highest F-stop, lock it and you're all set.

I never shoot fish as low as 1/60. Way to much blur on many of the photos. My minimum shutter speed is about 1/100. Aperture is usually f8-f11. ISO as low as you can go, which is 100 for me) way too much noise at higher ISO.

You should be able to put the SB-600 in manual mode to select different flash strength. And I shoot in full manual, but use autofocus most of the time. You should be able to do the same...manual controls on the body, the autofocus is all on the lens.
 
Thanks guys! I will try these suggestions in a couple hours (wife wants to watch a movie). I'll post the results tomorrow.

FYI, I have the issues I described above no matter the tank height. The umbee pics I took the other night is 24" and dark, the pics above are in a 30" tank and even 18" tanks so similar but not as bad.

Are you shooting in RAW and then post-processing? That is where you're really going to see a difference, and you'll be able to salvage a LOT more of the so-so photos.

No I'm not shooting in RAW. I just figured out how as sad as that is. I have photoshop now and can work with the RAW images from there.

Honestly though photoshop is new to me as in I've never saved a file before from it so I'm not sure if I will be able to do what comes easy to most of you guys. I will try though, I am a fast learner.

If you can get a copy of Lightroom 5, i'd use that before i'd use photoshop. I think its much easier to use from a beginner's stand point versus photoshop. All my post processing is done in lightroom.
 
I use some old version of Photshop Elements that came free with a printer I think. It's pretty darn easy.

Shoot in raw (your camera should be able to save the image as a RAW and as a JPEG - it uses up more memory obviously, but can be handy to have both)
Load onto the computer
Open image with your editing software
Edit the image however you want
Save it as a JPEG

That's really all there is to it.

For what its worth, I like the pics dark like that. They look natural. It's like your'e voyeuring them ;-)
