I've found myself rummaging through old pictures of texas cichlids, mainly carpintis in the past few days. I ran across a few threads with some great information about collection locations and even some mystery as to collection locations. I'd like to start out by saying I wish nothing more than to raise simple questions with simple answers. Some of those threads got pretty heated. My end purpose is to write a small article about the Carpintis complex, describe (to some degree) differing specimens based upon collections locations and hopefully clear up a little bit of the mystery behind some of the regional variants.

I know there are experts here on this very site with great info. I'd love to hear everyone's opinion/point of view on this particular subject. A few of the questions on my mind: Was there every any definitive answer as to whether or not Vontehillo is a real place? Are fish taken as Escondidos and La Chariel considered the 'same' fish? I know there was speculation that their native waters may have been connected...

Does anyone have pictures of said fish? If possible I would like to put together a chart or something representing the variant of carpintis and where they were collected in theory.

Any help is appreciated guys and please do your best to keep this a civil meeting of the minds. I'd like to get as much info out in the open as possible without trouble.

I don't know that there's been any progress (either from scientists or hobby collecting trips) in answering the questions that you raised in the past couple of years.

It isn't easy to export fish from Mexico these days so one should question any recently available "wild" fish from Mexico...

There are several fish "varieties" that have been given different names that are all from the same general area of the Panuco basin outside of Veracruz, MX. Whether they're actually different fish (different isolated populations, etc.) or just have different names is still unknown.

This should be an interesting thread, as the cichlidae article is.

I picked up 10 of the above not long ago, said to be descendants of H. carpintus la Chariel.
At this point, at only 1" -1.5" they look pretty generic to me.
Had what were said to be tamasopoensus a few years back, pics below.

I see. I've been looking around and I haven't seen any Vontehillos for sale for quite some time... have they just stopped using the name? I haven't seen Escondido's for sale (from reputable sources anyway) either though.

Do you have a hunch yourself Matt? You seem fairly versed on the topic...
