The classic "Small tank to closet" comparison

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree. We are talking about fish, they are very primitive and have no idea if they are in the Amazon or a 55g. Fish are probably more concerned with food and your feeding schedule.

Interesting thread...discussions on tank/closet comparisons seem to be a bit common right now. O.o BUT here's my input :D

Eventually I'll be faced with a decision, to keep my oscar in a 55g, where he is totally curious about everyone and everything going on near his tank and even in the next room over, or move him into a BIGGER tank in the basement, where there will hardly be any entertainment...and I'll probably only see him once or twice every day. Space vs his curiousity. I think a tank in the basement would get pretty boring pretty fast for him.

I find it disgusting when people buy a 20gallon with some green gravel and sunken ship decor and buy a few pacu, and other monster fish. I think that is cruel to take away their possibility of having a half decent tank. I don't know if that has to do with the topic

In the wild.. a neon tetra might swim all over the place.. however in home aquaria they are kept in 20g, 10g tanks. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying... in the wild it could swim for miles, in a tank it can swim for 20 inches.

Think about it.

Why? The neon doesn't, you don't actually think the neon can comprehend this, do you?

So he is for you enjoyment? I understand the idea of aquariums is to enjoy the fish etcetera. But your reasoning isn't even worth 0.02cents. I'd rather have a happy fish than a "happy" me. If you wanna see him more often, spend more time downstairs..

Are you saying just because the neon doesn't understand the torture it's fine?

fishaddict- Dragonsong is saying the oscar would be HAPPIER upstairs.. because it's a curious animal that loves attention and would be bored in the basement with no human contact.

And I'm not saying it's bad to keep neons in a 20g either, it's definatly not torture.

Not torture, but not as good as the wild. Do oscars have human contact in the wild? I think they'd rather have lots of space and tunnels to forage through than to be teased by humans.

You're not understanding what I'm trying to say.. no matter how big a tank is, it's small compared to the wild.. I'm not saying that that's a bad thing, I'm just saying..

No that is not even close to what I said. Who the hell said anything about torture. Unless you believe the 10g tank is too small for an 1.5" fish, do you?

Are you like the neon?
