The Crenicichla Vittata "alligator pike" growout thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good looking fish dude. They look even better now than they did when you texted me the pictures ,when you first got them. My group of C. johanna are really growing up fast now that they are in a bigger tank. They are 4-5" now and they swim around begging me to feed them constantly. Definitely the tamest Crenicichla sp. I have owned. My wife and daughters really like them. They say that the pikes act like the "Velocirapters" on the Jurassic Park movie. Lol. What are you feeding them besides tilapia? Mine get sinking carnivore pellets(that they don't like), earthworms, mussels, snails(crushed,no shell), live fish, crayfish, white shrimp, bloodworms, krill, and other meaty stuff. They act like they want to pair up already. I'm gonna get another group of Crenicichla sp. ,but don't know which ones yet. I really like your gator pikes though....P.S. I'm really gonna buy you some Windex and paper towels for your tanks homey!!!! Lol!!!

Hahahahhaahahahaahahah thanks man I've been so busy lately AP test prep, ACT prep, school work etc. can't even feed my fish everday! Thanks they've definitely filled out a lot since the first day I had them. There's a few people here on MFK mad at Ken for various reasons but tbh I'm quite glad that he still keeps doing what he's doing since there's no way I would've gotten these guys without him (even though I feel like I payed a little more than I should've each). They eat like mad. Good thing I moved them to another 10 gallon with over 400gph running on it to keep them in shape, I don't like obese pikes haha bad for health, life span and breeding. Normally I would try and mix in a large variety of foods but once they get a inch or two I'm going to start mixing in some type of Hikari pellets and some earthworms. Young pikes IME when raised up tend to become extremely tame.

Yeah def can see why they call them velicraptors young lugubris hunt in packs. Parents usually guard fry till around 6 inches that's part of the reasons why we sometimes see larger pikes like marmorata more often available than smaller ones because then water levels rise and small ones are too hard to catch. Glad your johanna want to pair up. My marmorata are showing no signs and are very nasty to each other and everyone lol

In regards to getting another group of pikes there are tapajos I, acutirostris, and a lot more cool pikes popping up lately. Do not grab any marmorata kinda regret getting mine they're one of the nastier lugubris I've kept lol. Alternatively if I can free up a weekend I might be able to order from Ollie Lucanus and drive up to the border and grab some fish shipped to a candian airport. His Jegui and Jegui cf. are some pikes I've been eyeing for awhile... PS if you're willing to pay top dollar for Xingu 1 text me... Lol ;)

I really like the C. jegui and cf. jegui also. I have wanted one since I first saw a picture. As far as the next Crenicichla sp. group, they'd be in a big species type tank. Maybe I can figure out one I like. I definitely want something that's hard to get and nice looking, either in color or body shape.
