The Darmali's Dragonfish babies FINALLY came in!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay, maybe I'm turning into mother hen, but I'm worried about one of the babies. I've got a pic somewhere on the net, I'll try to post it in a bit because it does a GREAT job of putting their size into perspective. Anyway, like I said before, one was nice and fat when I got it, the other very thin. The nice fat one continues to eat like a little horse and is very active. At feeding time he has no problem finding food and is already growing. The other doesn't move much, and does not search for food at all. The only way I can get his little self to eat is to chop silversides or use bloodworms, suck them up in a turkey baster and drop them right in front of the baby's face. He eats then, but never very much. It seems like he has less energy every day and is getting frighteningly skinny. What I'm wondering is... you know those guppy breeders with the "V" insert? Do you guys think I could keep the little one in one of those for awhile? He'd be able to find food much easier and I could keep a better eye on him. I've never had bichirs so small I lose them in a ten, but I do now and I don't like not knowing if they eat at that size.

Going to go hunt down that pic...

Mmm n yes the fat one has been biting at the baby too. Friggin endlis... my attitudinous friends.

^^ Thats a Mag Float 10 :D

how big are they? if they are around 2.5-3" i would get a breeding net basket type.. i used them for my recent arrivals of leichardti arowana. it makes it easier for them to catch what they want to eat. and easier to monitor since you said it is gettting skinny. have you tried market shrimps? blood worms? last resort is feeders (guppies or goldfish - small enough for them). my ornates and delhezi eats chop market shrimps and they grew fast. but feeders for the record gave me the best result. my delhezi were 3" and now at around 8-9" on all 4 of them, power feed and 3x of 25% water change, that is when they were in a 10 gal tank. sponge filter and a small HOB.:) hopefully this helps. (not all bichir eats market shrimp, at that size i won't force anything, just give him anything he wants until a nice size before you can teach him-but if he is taking it already then that's a good start).:) good luck!:) & keep us posted.:)

They are much too small for guppies or goldfish - only about an inch and a half :) The big one is doing well on bloodworms and diced (not chopped lol) silversides - the little one never finds the bloodworms but chomps on the silvers a bit.

The little one didn't make it :(

Oh no, sorry to hear of the loss keeper :(

I guess the brightside is that his/her sibling is doing great.
