The definitive stingray tankmate thread?

You are correct each fish is different but if you train them early to live with other fish it will work out in most cases

Much like with a dog if you train it to mix well with other dogs it should turn out to be social
If you give a fish feeders it will know to hunt other fish

This is why wild caught can often be a pain in the rear

My 13 inch Tropical Gars along with a couple short nose gars which are 11 inches go great with my 7 inch wide Pearl Stingray, however if food is near the ray, they may snap at the food and bite the ray accidentally. I have not witnessed a gar purposely harming my stingrays of any sizes.

As long as you are ok with the occasional headless tankmate (unless your ray is a cold blooded killer like Trevs) you want to look for large peaceful tank mates and if they swim in the middle to top section of the tank all the better, some examples would be tinfoil barbs all types, bigger growing silver sollars like wide bars, the biggest growing geophagus( although i lost one to a hungry momma ray) datnoids, psatticus peacokc bass mammons... but it will be trial and error and like TK said keep your rays well fed.

I've got a single 18 inch clown knife with my rays and they don't bother each other

mine too was with my rays for years, since the tig was tiny..... but if it is on youtube, it must be safe then ;)
Tigs have rough mouths and when i have seen mine eat pellets off of a smaller ray and its rough mouth get stuck on the disc edge and then the tig shake like a dog trying to get away, that is not what i want with my rays... dont get me wrong, i love tigs
My tig has also taken barbs to the mouth and bled like no tomorrow..

Any tank mate is a risk I have lost about 5 14" tinfoils and I have 2 the same size now with missing Gil plates

See I do find this fairly funny

It's what you want from a tank in the end

If you want a tank with just rays which I personally find a bit boring as a tank should be split into 3 levels top middle bottom

Something's don't seam to work long term if the rays are kept in a smallish tank like flagtails puffers most pleco and turtles

A tank most people would class as massive is just a grow out tank for rays and if you put flagtail or pleco in with the rays yes it may work at first as the sucker goes around clean all the decor and glass but as the sucker grows and it's demand for slim grows you will be left with one thing for it to suck on in the end the ray

As for ruff mouth on the tig how far do you go to protect your ray do you not mix them with other rays just incase they get damaged furring breeding
You stand a higher chance of a male killing a female than you do a tig killing a ray
