i think the markings also are an individual trait differing from fish to fish

Yes they are... however the basic y patterns are the defining characteristic... the patterns can change from the number of strips to thickness of stripes to spots... bloches broken stripes... these are the things that can be different from each one to the next.

Actually, to make things even MORE complicated, some ichtyologist divided the genus pseodoplatystoma into eight species (i'm rolling my eyes...) based on bone structure and color pattern...
