The Dreaded DE

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Unfortunately most of us will never get the opportunity to see an arowana in the wild. I personally don't believe an aro could even survive in the wild with DE. Do wild aros get DE? Possibly but if they are not able to recover from it, I believe they would perish.
Here is a good video, has some expanation regarding the vision of the arowana.

i read the whole thread, and every thread before yours and before your time. i jus recently got nat geo channel, im not so lucky and pay extra just for the channel. so unfortunately i haven't been blessed with seeing that awesome show. i'll wait for it to come on, learn a few things, and post back...

as if knowing about wild aros will help me understand why our aros geto it. it just happens, its like talking about flounders who are born with eyes normal, and they adjust n rotate to 1 side. it just happens, to every fish. jus like DE, jus happens to every aro, eventually. 1-5yrs and it didn't happen yet? keep it alive long enough, it'll get it
Seriously, I dont believe all arowanas will eventually get DE. There has yet to be a black with DE, posted publicly that is. Until then, we can't say whether DE will come no matter what or not.

thats a cool video =D

1. Complete bs.
2. They do not look up with one eye and down with the other.
3. There is an equal % of getting DE in each eye.
4. Why would they have nothing to look down at if they're in a pond?
if u put them in a plain pond, they wouldnt have anything to look down at. they would have to look upwards to get floating food and to look around. and the DE thing is just my opinion. u dont have to make an ass or yourself if u dont agree.

Wow, this went from a thread with potential to a pissing contest...nicely done all.

I'm interested to hear what ethnics and others who actually have large silvers have to say...also if anyone has wild caught silvers (not cb/farmed) and whether the wild ones are more or less likely to have DE.

I still have a lot I would like to add regarding DE. I will not waste time putting it into this thread, I fear it will be closed. Maybe if a mod cleans it up, though it may be past the point of no return, and the bickering can stop the thread can be saved.

Sadly for some reason many debates on DE seem to end this way. :( :screwy: I really do believe we could use a sticky on DE, this is a subject that seems to come up every other week.

I too would really like to know how well wild caughts or those directly descended from wild caughts fare. I would think will arro's would have a lot of selective pressure not to develop DE, which would not be the case with captive and inbred pet trade fish.

I'd also liike to know what size tanks people are using, and if ones in larger tanks (8x3 absolute minimum and larger) tend to develope it later then ones in small tanks.
