The Elephant in the Living Room

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My information comes from the Feline Conservation Federation. There does seem to be some conflicting points so maybe it is biased or outdated. I will do some more digging tonight when I get some time. Thanks for bringing this up though.

On a side note, I am just now noticing that your data has come from BCR. Watch this to see why I do not trust anything that they do.

Well, the local news report makes BCR seem sketchy, but that doesn't mean those incidents didn't happen.

Put it this way, don't you think if all driving license restrictions were removed, the rate of car accidents would skyrocket? You've gone through the permit process for hot snakes, you handle them, own them and know how dangerous they are. Surely you respect them, right? You truly believe any person off the street should be able to buy one, no questions asked?

I said before I didn't want to get in a point by point discussion, but I have some time to kill at work. teh google turned up these idiots very quickly, not all result in injuries but some injuries and some escapes:

I tried to pull from real news orgs so you can't just complain about the source.

I can post a link of tame wolves and wolf hybrid attacks if anyone wants me to.

Now what happens if there are no regulations or permits on the exotic predators and anyone can get them? Should I be concerned if an irresponsible owner that has two angry African lions on his property next to our farm? Or just ignored them and let them mauling the children or cattle?

I did read the whole article- more than you it seems. No where in there does it say that the cougars are escaped nor does it even mention anything about South American genetics turning up in MN. I am not saying that it does not happen but it should not prevent responsible owners from being able to keep them.

Do you really think that these laws keep the public safe? Safe from what? As mentioned before, the public HAS NEVER BEEN HARMED by a big cat with the exception of one incident that happened at the San Fransisco zoo (still think zoos are the only ones qualified?) Animal Welfare IS covered under animal cruelty laws. The animals must be properly cared for and in suitable habitats.
Please read the whole page as if you can. There is a statement that mentioned of records of captive bred cougars escaped into the wild. You keeps missed that statement.

Haven't looked at this in a while. But cmon guys. W/o any kind of system for keeping large predators there would be way more attacks.

And the number of attacks is something that the people defending the rampant ownership of these large preds are basing there opinion on.

SO, is it worth it, to own one of these big dangerous cats or other big dangerous animal, that you yourself will most likely be the one injured or killed, then YOUR family has to clean up the mess. Literally. Either take care of your injured self or bury you. I honestly don't think its worth it for anyone who just wants one for the sake of having one to get any of these larger predators. Acceptable to myself and many others are professionals or people studying and keeping these animals or trying to re introduce them to the natural habitat. Which is how it should be. You really want to leave your family w/o you? Or get hooked on pain killers because your "pet" messed you up? I don't think its worth it to ruin any child's life or loved ones life just so there is a big predator in the backyard. Any of those arguing for the keeping of these large predators by non professionals, your instantly losing respect by other members on here, that's all.

Iv been trying to let this thread die but just cant simply because of the sheer ignorance in the last post.

"Haven't looked at this in a while. But cmon guys. W/o any kind of system for keeping large predators there would be way more attacks. "

False. Multiple states have various exotics without permits and have do not have injuries galore.

"most likely to be injured or killed"

Nice try but most keepers of these animals are NOT injured or killed.

"I honestly don't think its worth it for anyone who just wants one for the sake of having one to get any of these larger predators"

Good for you, then dont own one. Dont try to control my life by your standards

"Any of those arguing for the keeping of these large predators by non professionals, your instantly losing respect by other members on here, that's all."

If its your respect Im losing, GOOD. If me wanting to keep a predator loses your respect than its not worth having. My caiman and I couldnt care any less. I am a professional firefighter and save lives every shift. I have enough peoples respect to spare yours.

Wow..I finely got around to watching this show...It is extremely biased.

A large snake that escaped from a pet store killed two young boys in Canada on Monday.

The children, who were reportedly 5 and 7-years-old, were sleeping over at a friend's apartment located above a reptile store in northern New Brunswick when the snake attacked them, Global News reports.

"The city is in shock," Deputy Mayor Ian Comeau told CBC News about the deadly attack.

The incident took place at 6:30 a.m. while the children were asleep, according to a statement by the Royal Candian Mounted Police. A preliminary report led police to believe the snake escaped its enclosure, traveled through the building's ventilation system and strangled the boys to death.

No one knows how the snake escaped from the pet store, known as Reptile Ocean in Campbellton. Initial reports said the snake was a boa constrictor, but later reports point to a 14-foot green anaconda. The snake was captured and is in RCMP possession. Autopsies will be performed on the boys' bodies on August 6 in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Not “man-eaters” by nature, green anacondas are native to tropical climates in South America. They typically eat small mammals, fish and turtles by coiling their bodies around its prey and squeezing them to death. Large anacondas, which can measure up to 29 feet long, can capture prey as large as adult white-tailed deer which are the same size as a small humans weighing up to 120 pounds.

On Reptile Ocean’s Facebook page, the company lists itself as an exotic pet store that sells fish, snakes, lizards, crocodiles and alligators. Photos of several reptiles it owns including a rat snake, woma python and corn snake – constrictor snakes that suffocate their prey.

Comeau added that Canada allowed the importation of large snakes in 2009. In an effort to control the population of several invasive snake species, the United States banned the importation of four of them last year, CNN reports. The snakes, the Burmese python, the northern and southern African pythons, and the yellow anaconda, have become serious problems in Florida.

Back in May, a college student was lauded for killing an 18-foot Burmese python with his bare hands. After the snake wrapped itself around his body, Jason Leon, 23, beheaded the 128-pound reptile in a Florida forest after he spotted it while riding his ATV.

"I would think a snake of that size could kill a very large animal," Carli Segelson, a Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission spokeswoman told NBC News. "It could kill a deer, so a person would be comparable in size to that."
