stripes are due to breeding. the male is prolly some kinda malau
the female is a zz i think is a zz red dragon
I never seen male FH have stripes when they are spawning or keeping their youngs! and these stripes look darker than normal !

I could say thats not a 100% FH a real flowerhorn must have a horizontal plums or if not must have an oviusly pearls on scale ,my virtue is that might be a festae + ampillopus labiattus which is they called red devil. but its a really impressive pair i can see with that ,take care with them give some rest seperate the male n female in 2 individual tank .And remember this your lucky coz is hard to find a compatible pair of this fish .

The male usually don't have stripes like that when it comes to breeding and guarding the frys(and the males would have ate the frys for being over protective - if its a true full flowerhorn).
I am almost positive that the male is a Barred Midas x ZZ and the female is just a ZZ. Bared midas stripes comes extremely dark like that when they spawn, so there is a high chance he got that from a barred midas. Males just don't have it, and they will eat their frys if guarding like that. :)

thanks for the comments so far - i feel less crazy not being able to decide exactly what mix of FH they are - but i can say that they have had their dark stripes on since they fell in love :)

porkchop has the darker stripes out of the two usually but ive seen their stripes come and go in seconds - before my eyes and it's amazing - big willie used to be quite light and usually didn't show his stripes unless he got all huffy about something - and they he definitely has more pearl when his stripes aren't 'on' - i'm going to see if i can find some older pics showing them with their horizontal plums -
porkchop has more red in her belly normally but big willie doesn't which is why i think he has some blue dragon in him too - plus as a side note until i found out how bad it was to have a black background in the tank we did - i just finally put the new temporary one up a few months ago -

regardless of what they actually are i can say they have very strong personalities and have proved to be much smarter than i had ever thought fish could be - now i hope to find homes for the babies because they are growing fast and know they will make great fish to have!

if anyone is interested let me know! thanks again to everyone so far for the comments !!

i'll post more pics of the fry soon and try to find some older pics without their stripes on!!
