So, the Fluval G is nearly here... i thought it would be a good idea to gather all the info about it in one place.

WHAT IS IT?

The next generation of external filters from Hagen and Fluval

WHATS GOOD ABOUT IT?

Well, Fluval have been working on this for several years and it appears to be a new design of canister filter that combines the media trays and electronic control of the eheim Pro 3 E series, with the multi-stage filtration and modern fittings that fluval are known for.

OK... I'M INTERESTED.... SHOW ME MORE

This new video shows more of the filter, but you won't get to see it in action until next week, after it has been unveiled on the 6th in the UK. Keep an eye on the Practical Fishkeeping website in the UK, as they have announced they will be getting one of the first ones in the UK - they also posted a video preview of the U series internal before anyone else.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?

the filter consists of media trays arranged around a bespoke pleated filter cartridge in the middle.... because these cartridges exert a known back pressure as they clog, fluval can monitor the pressure in the filter and the electronics rely on this to figure out when it needs cleaning and optimise the pump performance.

If you modify these cartridges, you will lose the electronic benefits.

Trial units have performed spectacularly and the new fittings are very, very well thought out... a huge step up from the old-fashioned fittings you get from eheim, and the fittings used be the FX5 and 05 series.

GIMME GIMME GIMME!

The filter will be onsale in october worldwide and prices wil not exceed those of comparable eheim filters. 2 models are known so far - the G3 and G6, tank ratings not known. More info to follow.

Be warned, these will be the new gold standard in aquarium filters - you will need one on your tank.

That is all... over and out.

(^_^) I will update this thread as more info is revealed.
Looks nice but how much is it going to be???

the point is i can get 3 fx5's for £390 with free postage. for only £40 more i can get 2 beastly backup filters instead of one main filter.
or with pond equipment i can push filtration to double an fx5's capacity for the price of a single fx5 (maybe less if i really looked around).
with this in mind, why would people want to spend £349.99 on a filter with the only redeeming quality of looking nice. other than to show off.

My point was that the fluval fx5 is meant to retail for over £250.... thats the RRP

but no one ever pays that

a fluval 405 is meant to be over £200 - but most retail stores charge between 90 and 100 and you can get it for 83 on ebay with no postage....

so to slate this filter for a high rrp is silly.,.... because no one ever pays the rrp for hagen fitlers anyway.

for the first year your gonna pay damn close to the rrp for this filter. its a new item and they have to claw back their development costs. after the first year or if too many start showing up 2nd hand before then, the price will drop significantly.
im gonna keep my eye on the 2nd hand hotspots like ebay for this filter and see how many suddenly appear because they "become surplus to requirements" or "im giving up the hobby".

i also think they picked a very poor time to be releasing something that is going to be so expensive for a short while.

i must be shopping at the wrong online stores then... because i never pay full rrp for my equipment - old or new.

case in point - these filters have been on sale for a few weeks - and one of the uk's most well known online retaillers sells them for £10 under the rrp - thats a 25% saving for the biggest model.... and they don't even advertise it as a discount... thats just the stock price.

$349 UK? That is over $570 US!!!!!!!! F-THAT!

that doesnt say much for the design of the fx5
The Fx5 design sucks. Which is why it has to be modded. lol. Atleast if you want to have fine particle filtration. You could throw in some 20 PPI sponges around the outside too and not mod it.

Still, I am so far against this new model. You and I have had our online battles and I am liking Eheim more and more. Atleast for reliability. Eheim flow rates suck. I think the only Eheim I would go would be the 2260 with the 2262 pump.
