The Fluval G Thread of Monster Electronic Filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
While i have to say the design is not bad, it's just no my cup of tea.
My filters are hidden away, so i don't really care how they look....i care for how they work.
The more gadgetry they put in, the bigger the chances of something going wrong.
Here in my opinion, simple IS best.

Also, 28 watts and 1000 l/h is hardly the best energy efficiency...
The eheim pro 3 2075, has an output of 1250 l/h and uses 16w.....

So, personally i won't be buying one.

When asked about the comparatively low flow rates for the units, a Hagen spokesman explained that the Hydrotech Monitor allowed the units to be run at optimum efficiency by warning the user when flow rates had dropped, and that cartridges could be cleaned or replaced so quickly and easily that they may run as efficiently as competitors models with faster initial flow rates.
184 GPH G3 and 264 GPH G4.

I find this comment is a bit loaded with BS. They need slower flow rates so the cartridges don't clog up as quick. lol

This also means, in larger tanks you need to add power heads within the aquarium.

To me a Wet/Dry, Fx5 or 2262 will be the sellers for larger aquariums and this filter might sell for up to 75 gallon tanks. haha.

G3 is rated for up to 80 gallon aquariums and the G4 is rated for up to 160 gallon aquariums.

We all know about the "ratings" of any filters.

Personally for really good pick up with mechanical filtration in larger tanks, you need a higher flow rate than a 184 gallons an hour

The Fx5 design sucks. Which is why it has to be modded. lol. Atleast if you want to have fine particle filtration. You could throw in some 20 PPI sponges around the outside too and not mod it.

Still, I am so far against this new model. You and I have had our online battles and I am liking Eheim more and more. Atleast for reliability. Eheim flow rates suck. I think the only Eheim I would go would be the 2260 with the 2262 pump.

:D

the flow rate of 184 gph I am assuming is with media present? if not, that sucks.

if so, its really the same as eheims and rena's that are half the price...

granted, there is so much more to filtration than flow rate.

but one of the big selling points of these monster type filters was high flow rates to give turnover to large volumes of water..

if they have taken that away, well, they we are paying a lot extra for the gadgetry right?

I prefer a higher flow rate to allow some current in the tank to allow particles to stay suspended.

That's the more ridiculous price being nearly $600 dollars. Hell with that much money I could buy a XBOX 360 a Playstation 3 and still have $100 left over. That's not to mention how much more technology is involved in a 360 and PS3 so for a fish filter to charge more than both of them combined is absurd.

Its clear that nowadays nobody knows what the customer wants. Even the illustrious Eheim falls into this category. Make a great filter at a great price. Its not really that hard when you think about it.

stick with eheim

great filter
great price compared to this new thing

when eheim was more expensive than the FX5 everyone said its way to expensive but its looking like a good buy for the money now

fluval have made a new filter with all the things the fluval fanboys hated

its great to see the fluval fanboys back tracking :D

its for ppl who want to show how much money they have, thats all.

monitor, temp, flow rate and conductivity?

temp, get a £2 digital temometer off fleebay
flow rate, just look at the end of the pipe
conductivity to show when you need to waterchange?, just keep to your normal timetable.

waste of money, lets see how long before a full stocked MFK`s tank would take to f**k it up!

it may take 20 seconds to clean the pre filter but i wonder how often thats gunner be? on a ray tank twice aday?

stick with your diy wet dry boys, ALOT better filter and easy half the cost to filter 600 gal tanks never mind what they recon this will do.

its a pure waste of money.

they talked to fish keepers? b*llocks, they talked to a few stuck up lazy gitz with to much money. if they talked to a proper fish keeper they would of built a 2,500 lph fliter with cheap effective media. which is easy to clean, has 2 inlets and 2 outlets (optional) has a huge prefilter which takes forever to clog and is quiet and cheap.

so, it has probes to monitor

ph - which is useless -on 99% of tanks it is a non issue.
temperature - which is again useless since we all have $2 thermometers
conductivity - again, basically useless unless you have a reef tank, and even then its not really necessary.
flow rate - again, not necessary. we all service our filters at regular intervals anyway.

Im disappointed.
