The Garmy : Review of 2010!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
personal 2010:
1. I gained experience as a newbie fish keeper and was able to "attempt" to keep more "difficult" species of fish including Gar(s).
2. I completed the construction of my "GarDen" pond which I built into my back deck outside by my swimming pool.
3. Mastered the "Art" of converting several species of Gar off of live food and onto a healthier diet of frozen foods.

Personal 2011:
1. Study the captive Gar guide and become a more successful gar keeper, so that I can be able to "contribute" to the MFK Gar forum in a positive constructive manner.
2. Transfer/ re-home my largest LNG to my spring-fed farm pond.
3. Cut my "losses" from 2010 by at least 50% in 2011. Most important goal for me! Failure in this area in late 2009/ 2010 as a newbie could probably be chalked up to inexperience and "jumping into" keeping more difficult fish too early into the hobby. I have no excuse for this kind of failure in 2011 and will have to seriously re-evaluate my "right" to keep these marvelous monsters if I can not curb the death rate!

I can say a good thing for 2010 is Alex taking a lead on this forum. It is a highlite that I was happy to see.

I have not much to say for myself.. 2010 was not much of a Gar year for me. Did have some moments though.. Some Field work was well rewarded.

2011 well we shall see what plans come together. I plan much much more Shortnose and hybrid work in the near future.

so how's everyone keeping to their new year garsolutions?:P

i wanted to thank everyone for sharing their resolutions with the forum, reGARdless of if you're any closer to it or not. (sorry i did not do this earlier, got tied up in stuff and forgot)

Sol, we are going to need a summary of all your work someday when you have the time! (that means probably in 2030...or 2040..or......)

for me, it seems that i'm on the right track thus far for 2011!

I can't believe that I haven't posted in this thread yet.

Review of 2010:

  • I finally got some gars! I got four tiny YOY longnose gars in mid-June; I had three by the end of the next day due to predation. The two that I still have are at least 16" now; the third one is now owned by Madding.
  • I got a Florida gar in September; it died after breaking its back in December.
Here are my New Year GARsolutions:

  • Acquire more longnose gars (preferably larger ones) for my pond.
  • Acquire some spotted gars and shortnose gars, and a few alligator gars for my pond.
  • Find/breed some hybrid gars (any hybrid will do).
  • Learn more about gars.
  • Participate in a field survey of wild gars.

So far I haven't accomplished any of my goals, but I think that I can accomplish at least three out of my five goals.

can't believe I missed this one too...

2010

- aquired my first 6" florida by dec he was already 14"+

- picked up another 14"+ florida in nov/dec

2011

- upgrade their 18" deep tank to 24"+ ( preferablly 30" if I can find one that won't make my husband cut up my cards over)

- find some shortnosed/longnose or even a trop or cuban ( though it's unlikely)

- Sit back and watch them.

NUmber 1 and 3 are well into the works.. got a budget for the tank.. now just need to find what I'm looking for in that budget range.

So far my resolutions are not going all that well, the gator gars have not been upgraded yet, although that was going to be a spring/summer plan anyways. The two longnose gars that I have found for sale, I was not able to purchase. Going to be looking into what is required to get a license to alow we to collect longnoses and other fish. There has been no word on the tropicals.
