THE GEOPHAGUS THREAD

Brasiliensis are more aggressive than those other geos. The others guys are right.... there is a lot of mislabelling with many of the eartheaters. It's tough at small sizes because they don't show adult coloration and even as adults the differences are slight. I would go for surinamensis, they get some nice red/blue colors. In my eartheater tank I have Surinamensis (or abalios), jurupari, and leucostica. They get along great.

Here is pics of my surinamensis types. Finally starting to color up a bit.

Your best bet for cleaning the gravel is a gravel vac, they do wonders! Geos will sift sand but I wouldnt rely on them for cleaning cuz they wont eat poop.

Btw the geo above is an abalios

I want to do a sand substrate for the bichirs and the geos sake, but I've heard it's very difficult to clean with a gravel vac. Any suggestions???

Can a single male geo (without females) be kept with other large fish and not get overly agressive???

Geo's are relatively docile fish, they're aggression is usually within their own species and even then it's relatively harmless. That said there are always exceptions so just keep an eye out. Geo's do prefer to live in groups when they're small so that's something to think about also.

I have a irredesent geophagus with an oscar, jag, dempsey & green terror in a 90 gal. The eartheater hold his own...chases anyone if they turn their back to him. I didnt think he'd last that long but he's been in there for 7 months.

Anyone ever keep or have any information on geophagus pellegrini?
