The "giving up fish guilt"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
depends on the fish. i had a chocolate for a short period of time that i traded for a rotkeil. i had no guilt giving it up and prolly wouldn't if i gave up the rotkeil. other fish that i've grown for years would be a different story. i love my severum pair and my datnoid. the only reason i'd give them up is if i had to move cross country

Living in a flat means that I have limited space for tanks... so having only a 120 means that I have to be a bit more picky about things and also if I want to try new fish and gain experience it means having to give someone up.

I suppose looking at them like a collection might make it easier.

I've given some away in the past, and have given one to an LFS when I couldn't find a better home and that all didn't bother me. But when its purely just because I want something prettier and shiner then I am struggling.

ah now I gotcha. I've had this issue in the past and I guess I can tend to be less attached to a fish that I don't like the look of. In this case I usually end up selling on craigslist.

I try to make sure they go to good homes but without seeing the setup or knowing the new owners it's hard.

I do my best to keep all fo my fish and take care of them regardless, but I understand the issue of "wait that one looks cooler"

case in point my pink kissing gourami just got booted from the 55g and placed in the pond temporarily. Why? because the red devil I just got is cooler. AND I traded my 50g hex and my 30g for a 100g so the red devil will have more room. (soon to be setup and the 55g used as a sump).

it's an interesting syndrome and we do crazy things for it just make sure that you try your best to find the fish a good home and you should be fine.

i felt really bad when i had no choice but to give all my fish up to a pet store b/c i was moving 1300 miles away :(

I get really attached to my fish. I had to give up my 10'' female texas, because she was extremely aggressive. I still miss that fish.

I have been thinking about giving up my silver dollars and oscar, because I want a trimac or a grammodes for my 72g. I want these fish, but don't know if I could part w/ my oscar I've had for 5 years. I can't afford another tank right now, so I'll have to wait awhile.

i know how u feel i hated when i had to get rid of my gold female severum.

just make sure you give up the right fish, after i gave my male grammode away for a mota that hid all day i realized it was a mistake, but it was to late to get him back.

I've traded in several fish over the years, and usually w/o any 2nd thoughts

but when I traded in my JD, I felt like crap . . . I went to the LFS every week to see if they had sold him yet, and at one point I almost bought him back

hated seeing him stuck in that 29G LFS tank, and it seemed like it took them forever to sell him . . .

but that was the exception . . .
