The gradient of price in relation to quality

obviously there's things that are expensive and their quality reflects that, and the obvious things that are bad because they're cheap, but then inbetween there's the hidden gems that are unbelievably cheap but do good, and then the things that are just horrible and overpriced.
what are your experiences with different equipment brands in terms of this type of scale? In my experience with heaters at least, the cheap preset tetra or aqueon ones have never failed me, but the slightly more pricey aqueons have burned themselves out (underwater). and then of course there were the bootleg imported ones that were like $8 that burned out in a week. I don't think I've bought an expensive heater so I can't say anything in that regard.

Reeflo pumps..quiet efficient workhorses. I bought a spare pump in 2006..it is still in it's box.
