The fish we call Jack Dempsey, Cichlasoma octofasciatum, may very well be and should be extended to accomodate all its numerous variants, just as all the other species of cichlids have been.

Regular Jacks, Blue Gene, Electric Blue, and Powder Blue...I believe the Electric and Powder Blues to be 2 different and distinct variants, and so Electric is not Powder, vice versa. Unfortunately my free time is very limited nowadays so I'll have to post pictures to differentiate each variant. Of course Blue Genes look just like the normal ones.

I'm not quite sure what you're suggesting here.

+1, not sure exactly what the controversy is other than considering powder blues and electric blues as different variants but these are def all considered all Jack dempseys who considers them separate spp?

Exactly, just like a Freddy is a Freddy unless you as a La Cieba owner. It feels like Jacks are on the low end when it comes to justification of labeling.

a la ceiba freddy is still a freddy though its just from a specific collection point, still confused... so you think that people think the different jack variants are NOT all jack dempseys?

Sorry for sounding like a moron here but aren't the different color varients of JD's all from line breeding i.e. - man made? Man made fish do not get sp varients as (natural orruring color morphs/different wild caught locations etc..) would.
