Yesterday I seen something very strange and very good thing/adaption. While fishing at the pier my buddy caught a Shinner and used it under a bobber for steelhead not even 5 feet from the pier and in 16 foot of water. Within about 5-10 mins a steelhead slams it but breaks the line a few seconds later. After tried to catch another shinner for a few mins he gives up and tries one of the 10 gobies he caught just for ****s and grins. About 10 min later we turn around to see the rod bent and a steelhead jumping; we land this one. The whole length of the Pier has rocks along the edge under the water which is prime gobie habitat. I dont think this was just a fluke that the steelhead was caught on a gobie. I think the steelhead are learning that the gobies are a food source and are keying in on them. In the moarning and evenings the steelhead are in shallow water not to run the river but to feed on the gobies then once the sun come out they go out into deepwater in search of other food such as alewifes. Most likly they are skamania that will run untill next summer. I will continue to keep an eye on this and learn more.

Ive read that native species are learning to feed on gobies. while fishing in a river I caught a 20 inch german brown trout an in its gut there were 4 gobies, one was 5 inches.I read that some formerly endangered species are actually thriving now because of the new food source,:) like there is this type of water snake that was endangered and now its numbers are alot higher. But the downside on the gobies is that they eat fish eggs:irked:

cool

I used to live in michigan, I miss the fishing. fishing got me interested in fish eeping

theres only one main species of fish eggs that gobies eat and thats smallmouths. Other species spawn during times of the year that the gobies are not there or they spawn in areas up rivers where there is no large gobie popultaions. There is a balance and a plus tho with gobies; young of the yr bass feast on gobies and it ensures that more young of the yr bass make it through the winter due to the fat storage from eating gobies. We have bigger and more bass (smallmouth) due to gobies.

Walleye are getting fat in Lake Erie off the gobies also.
walleye feed on the gobies here as well but as far as I know they arnt the main food. In the spring the main food for our adult spawned out walleyes on lake MI is whitefish and young coho/ king jacks.

Since the gobies are an invasive species, I don't think it's legal to possess live ones or use them as bait. I would check on that before you continue fishing with them...

^it seems like he catches them in the lake they are already in and uses them as bait so thats fine.

I noticed yellow perch from St. Clair and Erie with gobies in their bellies also. Also seeing many in the walleye. Not catching as many gobies out in the lake as before. Still seem plentiful close to shore though.

For those steelhead, try smelt from your local market. It's cheap enough and is their main diet in the wild. If they're around, they'll take it.

very true If you were to take them else where; but I was not the one fishing with gobies so who cares. Possesion of gobies is a $10,000 fine. I dont know if its legal to use them for bait where you caught the gobie from but it should be if it isnt.
