The Green Iguana Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok, maybe this is a pretty undetailed question to, but what makes them much harder than people first percieve. how long you have yours del?

I had a lovely green iguana for about 5 years. His name was Skeeter.
Skeeter loved fresh veggies and fruits and would eat a banana (his favorite) from my
hand. Unfortunatly skeeter got what I believe was a stomach parasite and
died many years ago.

Some tips
Keep their cage clean.
Always give them FRESH fruits and veggies.
FRESH water every day.
Spend some time holding it every day if possible. This will
help them get used to you.

I think most people dont do the research and realize the iguana becomes such a large powerful beast, if hes not taught properly, its a large lizard with his own thoughts and ideas fighting you, and usually winning. They arent really good cage lizards as they grow, unless you can dedicate a room to them, or teach them to socalize with other people/pets. I have only had Newt for a little while, but have read reems and reems of info on them. I take the time to get up and bath him first thing in the morning, walk around with him talking to him, make his fresh salad daily, make sure he gets enought attention, and still he gets into trouble from time to time! They are more like a teenager than a lizard. Heres some pics:

for starters:

they consume more electricty that a monster tank at a adult size, a single heat lamp just wont do in a large enclosure to heat it up. you have to have multiple heat soarces, heating pads, heat amps (need at least two to try and cover the iguanas entire body length or most of it), humifiders (this makes keeps the humidity up alot easier), uvb lamps, etc, etc.

they eat ALOT!!!, and im just going easy here. and with iguanas theres no such thing as overfeeding, where the diet is properly balanced, GIVE THEM AS MUCH AS THEY WANT UNTIL THERE HIND GUT CONTENTS!

i had bought about 20 different types of fruits, veggies and greeens one time and it was all gone in about a week and a half.:WHOA: so feeding these monsters can be VERY expensive.

They are high maintanence cleaning wise, since big iguanas can take a **** the size of a medium size dogs crap, and sometimes its not always where it should be even if you ig is potty trained, sometimes when thing dont go there way, they start to use whats called retibutive pooping or.........****ting on your things because you pissed them off, changing routine that you normally do with him will piss him off, these things can be as simple as, changing shifts at work, going on vacation, doing things you wouldnt normally do as usual, etc etc.

oh and ive had mine for 3 years before i was forced to give him up :(

My ig had roundworms,

but i didnt know at first, i started to notice that he wasnt putting on weight and was almost in a lethargic state.

so i decided to take ihm to a vet, i got him a fisical and a parasite (poop) test.

he was fine on the outside, vet said he look great, best lookin iguana he had ever seen.

but the test revealed that he had round worm, poor guy had had them ever since he was born.

so i got his butt dewormed, its not that expensive, cost me 40 bucks for both deworms, the first was to kill the adults, and i had to come back in a week one more time to finish the job when the eggs hatched, was good to go ever since then.

cost me 80 bucks total

Nothing personal. I think that green iguanas are one of the very few reptiles that do not make good pets.

I have kept them in the past, and I understand that as with anything there is always exceptions. I dont like them and I will not sell them to my customers.
