The Hobby Was More Fun When I Started

It seems fish have a scale of attributes that make them attractive to people.. and this changes person to person. For me the scale is like this:

1- Behavior expected- Most important to me... what I expect the fish to do in my tank and how it reacts to other tankmates. Its rewarding when you find that perfect fish puzzle piece that compliments your tank.

2- looks- (nice to have cool looking animals)

3- interesting characteristics- it might have an interesting feeding thing, like predators, be weird looking, or be rare or just get super big.

I think a lot of people go for group 3... they just want to watch a fish eat other fish, watch it get big, or think it'll be more interesting because they paid more for it. I could see how fish in this group don't hold their long term appeal.

I never feel this way because I am never going to achieve keeping a red tail for a very very very long time lol.

Guess I can't be in group 3. I have a fascination with fish that don't move. Bichirs and lungfish.

They sound like group 3 to me.. unusual fish, at least for most people. Otherwise you're probably an exception of people expecting a certain behavior and having that behavior be nothing. lol

No he is in no way in a 5000 g biotope. And by the way you give GOOD advice. Not some idiot who automatically says that one red tail needs a 20x20 tank. I am gonna get a "stock tank" which is 5x6 foot. Stock tanks are nice and MEANT to hold water (unlike kiddie pools) Not big enough for mosts expectations but hey at least i am trying.

I believe it is very true that a RTC needs something very large to express natural behavior.

Monsters are not for everyone, neither are small fish. It's whatever you like, and that might change with time. I've been keeping fish for over 30 years and still find ways the hobby is exciting. And maybe fishkeeping is just not for you, or not now, that's also possible.

Have you considered that the issue may be that you actually feel a little guilty for buying a fish that you can't adequately care for?

"but hey at least i am trying"....with this attitude, you should probably follow through with the declaration you made in your other recent thread that you were quitting the hobby...and take up a hobby that doesn't involve caring for live animals. Stamp and/or coin collecting come to mind.

It should be a balance. Having a huge fish in a tank that's too small isn't fun. But Al, I would argue that your type of setup - huge tank with mostly small fish - isnt fun for most people either. It's what you enjoy but not what most mfkers would enjoy. The best setup is somewhere in the middle.

Breeding pair in a big enough set up to grow the fry to a sellable size is one of the most rewarding things you can do...
Something rare enough to sell, pair of cubans or red jewels sell well here in the uk. Im now down to a group of midas expect 1 butti and some cats in my big tank, species setups can be very rewarding instead of a mish mash of random fish....

Also dont over think your hobbys, enjoy your self and dont make the hobby buy fish as some said earlier.. the moment it becomes a chore its not a hobby is it...
