"The Indominus Project"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so an update, I just realized the cause of Nick's aggression in the tank, as I saw his little breeding tube poking all the way out. He was in the mood for breeding, while the female wasn't. I got him back in his tank to prevent any hormonal breeding ques from stressing out the female who clearly wasn't ready, since I just moved her spawn and her previous mate only a few days ago. I've had bad experience with males wanting to breed with females who weren't in the mood for it, and I didn't want to take any chances, so I'll give my female a week or two of conditioning to see if she gets stuffed up with eggs again. Then hopefully I can try to pair them up again with a little more success.

I may have gotten a little impatient and put Nick back with the female because I saw she did fill back up with eggs and had her egg tube out and after leaving them alone for almost the whole day, I'd say they've paired up
Still a but of aggression on Nick's part but they usually swim together and chase things off in unison

Well that's good tho. Usually a female won't breed with a cowardly male.

Btw love how long his streamers are on his fins. The female also has some nice color going on too.

Eggs are coming very soon, I'm seeing alot of good behavior with them. Nick has stopped being aggressive, and the both of them have been doing alot of cleaning and digging around the female's old territory. I just saw the female get in a flaring match with the big male rainbow cichlid, and nick came rushing over to help. They have been defending the overturned flowerpot very furiously, so I think there should be eggs coming in a few days. The female has swelled up pretty significantly as well.

After almost 3 weeks, they're finally getting ready to spawn, Nick's been cleaning the inside of the half pot and flaring that female, trying to entice her to go into the pot
Meanwhile the female is almost bursting with eggs

Here are the pictures of the female I got earlier just to show off her breeding dress and Nick, they're spawning right now in a completely closed off pot so I won't be able to see fry for the next week but I'll definitely update you all

I'm currently watching them through a hole in the sand in the bottom of the tank because they dug that cave down to the glass.
Can't get a picture from down there because I don't want to drop my phone into the tank under them or scare them out of spawning. I'd be pretty freaked out if a giant black rectangle came up from underneath me when I was in that act lol
