...in the fake pop star department.
Hatsune Miku is hologram selling tons of records and performing sold out shows, but unlike our cartoon bands like Gorillaz, even her voice is completely synthesized. Check out this video of one of her shows (warning the music is traumatizing).

As awful as the music is, I'd go to one of these just to witness it. From a technology point of view it's incredible. And at least this way you dont have to worry about your starlet going on a drug binge and getting into trouble between shows, you just turn her off and put her in a box.
Heres the link in case I mess up the embed

i hate to be the one to say this, but thats not a hologram.

Why throw that out there and not tell us what you think it is then? lol
I think the whole thing is fake. Just anime and CGI or whatnot. The entire "craze" and hype is probably all fictional as well.

Actually it is, its just not Star Wars level hologram. You can see her from the side so she's more than just a flat projection. Its not physically possible to do holograms like you see in movies, you have to have something to catch the light and make it appear in one spot.

AFAIK she is "projected" onto a LCD screen which has no back or front...then the parts of the screen are "excited" where her image appears.

Because the crystals in the LCD screen are excited where the projection is they retain some of the light, which causes her to show up...where the screen isn't excited the screen is transparent up to 90% worth which isn't apparent when the screen its self is huge.

In America a screen like that would be destroyed in less than two full songs.

This is 100% like watching a music video. I wonder if all the fans get that excited when they youtube her music videos as well.
People here still pay to go see Dethklok or Gorillaz, they just have the actual vocalist on stage along with the cartoon.
