The King.....

I've kept seven doviis in the past.

Got my first batch of two at 2". Luckily, I had a pair, and they bred in my community 240.
Funnily, it was the female that was by far the more vicious than the male. They bit and attack the other fish, but did not actually kill any (giant gorami, black belt, red terror etc).

After four years, the male was 18", female 9". I made the mistake of introducing a jardini. The doviis were breeding at the time and held their own. I took the fries out, and they became more docile. The jardini killed them both after a while, along with everything in the tank. To this day, I regret losing those doviis more than any other fish :(

I bought another batch of five at 2 " as well a couple of years ago. Grew them out until about 5", kept the nicest male, and gave the rest to friends. Recently, that male at 14" was killed by a butti.

The only fish these doviis ever killed in my care was when the second male killed a 10" flowerhorn. Except during breeding, the doviis I have kept have never been as vicious as some of the stories I've heard. They're magnificent fish, my favourite cichlids. Trying to find more at the moment.

Wow that must have been one badass Butti....My male dovii when it was 10" killed a 10"RD and a 12" Buttikoferi.....But i guess you had a laid back male dovii.... Also how big was the Jardini and the dovii's when the Jar killed them. My Jardini is about 10" and has yet to show any serious aggression...

Seeing all this talk about dovii lately has reminded me that I would really like to keep a pair one day. What is the best way of sexing them when they are young (2" or less), or would my best bet be to purchase several, grow them out, and find a pair later?

That butti was a bit of a psycho, he killed a few tankmates. But he was the only butti I've ever kept, maybe they're all like that?

The jardini was about 20 in. Once the reach that size, they are really thick impressive animals. The male dovii was 18 in. Maybe I just had the exception to the rule, that is, doviis that were not that aggressive

At 2", they're pretty pale, washed out (colorwise) animals. I couldn't tell at that size. I was able to distiguish the sex at about 4-5 in.

Could you post some pictures of that 18" Dovii? He must have been impressive. How about the jardini do you still have him? Any pictures? He must have been a beast.

Hell anything thats 20" that can kill a 18"Male Dovii has to be impressive. I'd also like to see pics of this monster....:grinyes:

That male dovii was 4 years old when he was killed. He grew very quickly initially,
something like 14-15 inches in two years, but slowed down in the last two.

The jardini I bought was at 20 in already. I quickly learnt why he was kept by himself in the lfs. I did not know at that time jars were so aggressive, as non of the literature mentioned it, thought I just had a particularly psycho individual.

Like I mentioned before, it was funny that it was the female that was the more aggressive of the two, although she was half his size. I used to feed them live adult mice that we caught. The male swallowed them, but the female always tried, but was unable to. She'll normally rip the head of and spit out the decapitated carcass, making a mess of the tank.
