I've seen them "dance" if you will. Sometimes a couple minutes, sometimes hours. The male will chase around the female thumping the back of the females disk, biting, tugging on her. She tries to poke and jab him with her tail but since they can't roll it over he doesn't get stung, but rather rubbed raw with the spikes you see down the sides of thier tails.
Here's my bigger males raw cheeks. There's movement in one of the ladies he's in with, so at least he know's what he's doing. Have watched the same "dancing" go on with the big rays. Same wounds, females just tore up around the disk perimeter and both fins underneath just tattered, males with the same abrasions.
Have any of you guys that breed rays seen similar things? Will the female refuse breeding if she is indeed preggo and that's why the male gets this bad?
I think if I was him I'd just pic another female, especially with that bunch to pick from
