That's not a bad price. You can find them cheaper but then you'd have to pay for shipping.

most likely a Florida gar....but could be a tropical gar....i cant tell to well in the pictures....How much did you pay for him...that will usally let you know....if you paid around 50 bucks...its a florida....if you paid around 120 its a tropical...there a cool fish though...but beware they will bit you if you stick your finger in the tank.

i would have to say that is one of the worst assumptions ive heard yet. the amount of money someone pays for a fish does not determine the species. in fact, in this case its probably the furthest from the truth. gars are often mislabeled by lfs because of the lack of knowledge in the trade. in my case, 3/4 lfs think a gar is a needle nose, rocket gar, etc etc. mention florida or alligator or spotted and they have no clue. they all think those species are 15' monsters that eat humans, ( or something else totally off the wall)

^bwahahahahaha

The lfs probably doesn't know what a gar is, otherwise they won't put it in a goldfish tank which is like a gar's paradise. They will scratch their heads when they count the goldfish.

hey i got my 2 floridas from ricks last weekend. i got a 3rd coming hopefully next week (from the guy that thinks his florida is a spotted florida alligator gar in a 55g). i found a 125 complete setup including an ac110 and fluval 404 with oak stand and canopy im picking up tomorrow for $200. so im gonna take the gars out of my 120 (60x18) and house them in the 125 for a while. my dad is an aeronautical engineer and has access to aircraft aluminum and tons of computer programs to design (well, airplanes) but he said hes sure they could handle building a rectangle fish tank lol. so for the amount of money ill be saving, im looking at getting an 8'x4' footprint!!! haha cant wait. gotta move first, so thats next on the agenda

dear me all i wanted to know was if the gar in question was a florida or a spotted and this thread has gone on to 4 pages now :D

yea, they had 4 total and i bought 2 of them. one of mine has a beat up snout that i think may be permanent from being in such a small tank. they were all + or - 12 inches and all 4 were in 1 10 gallon tank. i have to get pics up of them. both are very beautiful
