Looking at the fins and lips of some of those guys, it's not always so peaceful and quiet. Works very much the same as an African set up, no breeding pairs, lots of fish to spread out the aggression, means a successful community of big and aggressive fish that have to many targets to single out any one individual and kill it.
 
Generally speaking you all got it right: from my experience the way to monitor the aggression is by having one fish of every species, split the potential aggression between some/many fish, strong filtration (5 times per hour the size of the aquarium), strong and assertive species, regular meals, no hiding spaces, leave the idea of biotope behind, and still be ready for some level of aggression.
