The best way I know how to answer that question is to say That would be Whatever cichla is IN in combination with RARITY
a good example is look at the price that Orino's was a couple years ago and compare to todays prices ... Orino's are my personal favorite and they do have quite a alot of people that love them , but today I would say Azuls , Fogo, Intermedia, Kel's would be the top 4 spots of being the most expensive in no particular order btw
Now naturally if any Peacock bass even something common as a Occel or mono was found with a Color morph , platinum ext. Anything to make that fish slightly different from ANY other Peacock bass in the world ! once obtained and seen by other aquarist The price would Easily go into the thousands if not the ten's of thousands Why ? Not only with Peacock bass but with most fish we feel like we acomplished something great by obtaining a Rare find and other hobbist would tend to put Anyone on a Higher "pedistal" than themselves if that person had a fish that very few if any other people ever had .... But when you think about it ( unless you collected the specimen yourself ) all most people do is a simple movement of reaching in their back pocket and pulling out theri wallet ... but that is something that anyone can do right ? their is a difference though ....... ( here's the secret ... Some people have more money then others .)

In all reality it doesn't matter what others think , If YOUR going to take your money to buy the fish , and YOUR going to take your money and pay the high electric and water bill and YOUR the one going to be doing all the maintenence on the tank and YOUR the one going to have to look at and enjoy the fish don't you think the only opinion that really matters here is YOURS ?

I am new to cichla, and one the reason I am asking because, here in my area azul and brokopondo cost about the same price, and there were not many other cichla available in the lfs here. I agree with you that in terms of preference it comes to an individuals own choices. Thus I was just wandering if there are cichla species that people favor the most.

It really comes down to personal choice. But I see a lot of people buying Cichla by the "flavor" of the month, week or year. I've been lucky enough to have own Peruvian monos, Guyana and Guiana Ocells, broko ocell's, wild kelberi's, bahia's, azuls, tems, floridian ocells, rio meta orino's and so on. But I would take a good looking mono over any Intrem's or Xingu's any day......(I'm lying) just for the fact that I have never owned a interm or a Xingu before. But I would pay good money for a good looking mono.
As for the most expensive cichla now, in the US, I would say a grown Rio Nigro Orino would cost more then a baby Xingu or a baby interm. Those cichla are on top of MY must get cichla. 24k Ceara's to.
As for having the nicest patterns/markings, I would have to say Wild kelberi's. You have the mono colorings of the yellows, greens and reds, but the gold spangles on the tail, anal fin and dorsal fin. So, kelberi's get my vote for nicest patterns and markings.

I would say my favorite is the Rio Negro orino. I can't find them. Orino's in general are my favorite cichla , although I developed a fondness of the kelberi bahia.
As for pricing I paid $190 for my bahia 2 months ago when he was 4 inches. I think I may have overpaid considering I was able to buy a wild 3 inch brokopondo ocelli for $75.

I too love the perfect circle occelets of a RN orino. And im in love w/ the spangles on a wc kelberi. But I also adore the blue of an azul...and the points on their bars. The xingu I had to have because of the gold and its rarity.
