So my Oscar Brick gives me a fright days ago by swallowing a plant anchor. He has since hucked it up...and has been in overdrive policing the tank ever since. The Severum Chip is exiled to one side of the tank. When he decides to swim elsewere he gets chased back (either by the O or BP Boss). The chocolate Bobo is now one of the "gang". He gets chased too, but not as much as the Severum. Bobo gets chased to the O's side...the BP Boss is the other dominant fish in the tank. He now shares turf with the O. So basically everyone is on one side except the Severum. The dominant fish want Bobo on their side, and Chip exiled. Now Chip finds moments to swim the tank when the others are occupied. When the dominant fish swim together they'll go where ever they want.

Boss (BP) also will police the tank. Sometimes everyone is bouncing off each other chasing...Bobo and the new syno Spot are the latest entries. (The synos have their own little tiff but that's another story).

Now the dynamic with the severum and chocolate is interesting. As expected, Bobo got run around for a couple of days, especially by Chip. But Bobo settled in and watches the other fish chase the Severum. Now he's getting a bit fiesty with Chip. Sometimes he scoots away, sometimes he flares and catches Chip on the lip. This confuses the severum. Its like the choc has determined the sev is low in the pecking order and isn't impressed. So he deliberately swims over to Chip's area despite getting chased. Low key aggression, only when Chip keeps bothering him. Actually went at the severum's eyes a couple of times, nothing serious. Then Brick flies in and busts up all the squabbling. He turns on the severum first (You get over there!)
and then the choc (And you there!). They scatter to their respective sides.

Boss has loads of animosity for Chip. He's the preferred fish to chase, though he will chase Bobo at times, but not much. He seems to be good with Bobo near his area as long as the choc doesn't go close to his branch cave. But the bp has always been clever and tactical. At times the O will blast at him too but instead of running he 'rolls over' the O's back giving him no target to hit. He's just too stubborn to run far, he may dart a bit but comes right back. He's been with Brick since he was a baby and has seen all the O's moves. They have a unique co-alpha thing going on. Often will swim together. Boss is the only fish that can share Brick's personal space.

So basically nobody can stand Chip the Severum. He desperately tries to be dominant but it will never work against the tank muscle. He can't do anything with the O and the BP bangs him around. Boss already gave him a lip tatoo earlier this month. Brick took over the pvc cave by stuffing himself into it, pushing Chip out like a hot dog from the bun. (I've since removed it for now) Brick never met a space he didn't try to cram his big a## into, even when he can't fit or hangs out the back. He had to back out to free himself.

Chocs get to a good size too. As Bobo grows it will be interesting to see what happens. Chip is bigger but Bobo is already thicker. My choc can pack away some food!

And to keep the crazy going, my Oscar decided to bite two of my fingers because I cleaned around a plant during yesterday's water change. Fresh water made everybody daffy, chasing in circles. The sev and choc bounced off each other trying to escape the O. The BP was like 'screw this' and went to his area.

Speaking of BP's...I've talked before about the ultra aggression of Patch my female BP (in avatar).Well she took it to another level again last night. Her tank was full of eggs that needed cleaning out. I try to wait for her to finish but will give small w/cs because water quality goes to crap quick when she lays. So I put her in a 5 gal bucket while I worked. I heard all this banging and thrashing behind me. She was at the surface and throwing water everywhere on the floor, swimming in rapid circles. I kept working. Heard loud plops. Turned around again and to my shock she was jumping out of the water! Each jump she was getting higher into the air. I'd had it. Took a bath towel and folded it over the bucket to keep her calm. She would have been on the floor in another second. I have never had a fish try to 'bust out' like this before. She has a lot of Midas in her ancestry but I don't know if they're known for doing this. She's just plain wild.

So I made a minor change in her tank, moving the jumbo airstone to the opposite corner. The move is a hit. She loves darting over there, grabbing a mouthful of air and blowing bubbles as she swims back. I'll try to get pics of her new game.

Kong is still going through his 'spazz at random stuff' phase. My uber macho parrot freaks out at striped tops, shiny or sparkly material, cowl neck sweaters, and knit hats. I should point out horizontal stripes are a problem, vertical stripes are ok. Poofy hats are bad, small hats are good (whut?). He nearly gave himself a concussion one time bouncing off the glass. I keep a dark green smock nearby I'll put on.

That's all for now. More than enough, if you ask me.

You seem to have an intimate knowledge of everything going on in your tanks. Your fish are lucky to get that kind of attention. I'll admit that sometimes my attention span is run thin across my 3 tanks, and I sometimes wont pick up on a problem before its too late to fix it.

I usually do the most watching when adding new fish or rescaping of areas. Since my office is downstairs they see me walk across the hallway. Sometimes its just luck, being in the fish room at the right time!

At times I'll relax and doze off looking at the main tank after a stressful day. The fourth tank with Tango is in my office and he watches tv while I work.

Too awsome!

I have a vieja melanura, the tank boss, chocolate, severum and my rescue BP, Lola. Vieja chases everyone but mainly the chocolate, he chases the severum and the sev chases the BP. Gotta love the chain of cichlid command. Also of note, the green terror and electric blue acara happily fly under the radar of everyone!!!!

Thanks for sharing! Where did you pick up these fish?

Beltway Aquarium in Charles County, MD. They specialize in SA, CA and AF fish. Lots of flowerhorns, Pacu, etc. Fish are great, manager is a nightmare. They often have full sized fish you can't get at the regular pet stores. The wife deals with the public mostly.

Boss, Patch and Kong were in a tank with several other parrots and two JDs. The JDs where whirling and stressed. I suspect Boss and Kong may be brothers. There was a monstrous female BP that resembled Patch but she was floaty and full of eggs. Months later when I got Tango the store folks said "oh, you got the crazy one."

Brick was in a tank of about 50 baby oscars, all uniform in size at 2".

Right now they have an old parrot couple (the male looks like an average grade mammon) that are the size of small pumpkins. They play and 'kiss' each other. Last month they had HUGE clown loaches, most of 'em sold.
