I can understand your grief with the new parts, I am an old school guy myself. The new parts work, and you can easily customize the length of intake and outlet, but that will cost additional $$$. I do not think the O-rings ever wear out.
IMO it was just a way for Eheim to make more money and shake off the prejudices that they have old designs...
However, setting everything up nowadays is much easier than in the old days, when you had to cut, push, screw, saw.... Today, it's "plug & play"-no tools required. You shouldn't have had that fifth beer before you started setting up your new filter
