The "New Guy" Story and Marineland C530 review

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dont know where this guy has gone, but i will say this. After reading his review i breathed a sigh of relief. I just bought this filter from pet mountain, mostly because of the price, 189$, i thought it was a bit of a gamble. it was either that or wait till i get the good fluval fx5 filter. Im a little impatient so i decided on the c530. Now i can't wait to set this canister up tomorrow when it's delivered. Thanks man wherever you have gone!

I have run a 530 for awhile now and like the filter. But kinda like a first car in high school there are some quarks you need to be looking for. First between each basket is a little rubber O-ring that seals the flow tube to the bottom of the filter in each basket (it's about a inch or so wide) these are removable and you can loose them in a heartbeat. Without these O-rings the baskets will not seal on the flow tube and you will get allot of bypass and air which leads to the second quark. Don't try to overfill the trays make sure when you fit them in place that the flow tube fits good and tight between the baskets. You will know if it is not fitted tight if you get allot of air when you tip the filter slightly to each side. You will get air buildup at the top end of the filter. I tip mine just a little bit to each side about once or twice a week just to make sure no air is built up in the motor housing. And last but not least do yourself a favor and order a extra gasket kit (very inexpensive) it contains about three or four of these O-rings in case you loose one and trust me at some point you will:). Other then that the thing is a beast and will do a good job for you. Oh!!! one last thing if you use the fine filter polishing (White) pad be sure to check it about once a week they an clog fast. See it's almost like a car you just need to know the little things:D

I used a marine land filter, and I do have the problem where if I tip it side to side, it will make the noise where there is air in the filter. Also, the fine white filter pad, I just took it out, after the first month it does more harm then good, and I've never replaced it

Thanks for all the good advice. After i set it up i did notice all of those things, i only have one question. I have owned a few filters in my life, and i know that if air gets trapped in or around the impeller it will make a kind of sporadic clicking noise. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get rid of this problem with this filter. I dont get any micro bubbles untill i tip the filter, but it still annoys me when i hear it. Do you have any suggestions???

i picked up a 530 on clearance for $130 and was pumped. my only gripe was they type of media included. too much carbon(never use it except to get rid of meds) and i think the bioballs are relatively useless, but it is nice to not have to buy stuff right away having some media to start. good review and welvome to mfk

and i also noticed i can always get air out by tipping/shaking the canister. the top doesnt seem to get too hot so im not too worried.

I'm not sure on the 360 and smaller filters as the hose connectors are different, but I'm told it's important to make sure they are all good and tight on both ends you will see almost like condinsation between the threads and the hose if it's getting air. You know I'm beginning to think it's the nature of the beast (so they say)with me it's not constant and probably no worse than my FX5 or 406 I think all canisters get some air. I got rid of all the junk right away when I setup my 530 dumped the Carbon and the Bio Balls. I think most folks replace it with eheim or fluval media, in my case BioMax. The holes in theBiomax will trap air and can take months to get rid of sometime. You have to admit the Marinelands are massive theres so much space in there you almost can run out of Media options:grinno: It runs great has a good flow the cost is right so I put up with it spitting out air. Like I said kinda like a old car.

Oh one last thing with that clicking when you get air I had a old timer at my lfs tell me to steal the silicone or vasaline trick from the AC people seems to have woked for me. I just get a slighly loader hum when it needs to be bleed. Give it a try can't hurt:grinno:

Just an update on my new filter, the air bubbles that were bothering me so much when i first set up this filter have slowly decreased day by day. I am happy now. My only thought now is "good filter for the money". Anybody thinking of buying one and dont have the money for an ehiem or fluval of the same class would definitely be happy with this filter. Good luck to all.
