I am looking at getting a new camera. I have had my Minolta X700's since high school and love them. I was actually disappointed to find out that Minolta cameras are no longer being produced!

I am intrested in Cannon's Rebel XTI, I went in and was talking with the guy at the local camera shop here, and I am not too sure how much he knew in regards sizeing and mega pixels. I asked what size of picture could you make with a 10 MP camera and it was a bit of a dance around the actual size, but for the most part he seemed fairly knowledgeable dispite this one fact.
I want to know is it worth spending the thousand dollars on the camera, or should I go with one that is still a good quality but a little smaller in Mega Pixels.
I am thinking of using the camera for more then just around the house pictures, I love photography as a hobby, and would like to also branch into selling my pictures or even doing wedding photography.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what camera I should be looking at? I am willing to spend a little more if I can justify it in the end.

I'm not an expert, but mega pixels only determine the resolution of the picture, which is rather insignificant unless you want to print or publish high quality images.

In an EOS (SLR) camera, you want to focus mainly on the capability of the different selection of lenses available; which can cost just as much as the camera body.

Mega pixel is like talking grain, the smaller the grain the sharper the picture. but this is also like comparing 35mm to a 50 mm camera film. The pictures can look identical but its when you want to enlarge the picture take a picture from the picture type idea where this is the most benefit. application like take a pic of a school of 20 - 30 neons and isolate one on film and use it to show what one fish looks like.
What I am looking at is how worth is the rebel xti in compared to a smaller mega pixel camera? Or as I am looking at this, is this a more personal choice here? Anyone have any good or bad reviews for this camera?

the amount of mega pixs means nothing it depends on the size of the ccd sensor on an slr its bigger then a segment of 35mm film so a 6mp will take a much better picture then a small compact point and shoot with a ccd sensor a 1/4 of the size all it does is add noise to the pic from cramming all the pixels onto a smaller area.

dont get me wrong a min of 5mp is reqiured to get a decent pic and more is better for slrs in a nut shell .
a compact camera has it uses such as travel and for posting on the web but not for high quality pics.

I know what mega pixel means. What I'm saying is, don't buy a camera simply because of it's high mega pixels; as it is, like I've said, rather insignificant to the average amateur photogarpher.

Mega pixels dont mean crap if it's a crappy CCD or crappy lense. I agree with M|L. 10MP isnt necessary for average sized prints.
