My gf lives in the Philippines in a smaller town area very close to the coast (not near big cities), and occasionally (not often) have one at the market there. They dont catch them, but they wash up onshore and whomever is lucky enough to find it, keeps it. She sent me pics of the last one she saw washed up on the beach, it was at beginning of this year I think.
I tried to do some research, but as said above there is very little information.
And because it is worth more than normal fish, it is cut up and sold very quickly. not like the townsfolk are going to hand it in to a scientific institute for further study.
