As a piranha fan, and like many others out there in warm(er) water areas, i too feel the pain in not being able to raise these magnificent creatures in california, as they are hard-core illegal. HOWEVER, although few fish match the aggression and beauty of the piranha, there are alternatives to fans in illegal zones. Silver dollars are another awesome fish which is closely related to piranhas, sharing some of their characteristics. When fully mature, many metynnis species can grow in width, as they are quite thin, resembling the muscular build of other piranhas. On this thread feel free to comment on other piranha alternatives and any cool pics or info on the silver dollar. thanks

My wide bar blue hook dollars (Myleus Schomburgkii) are a great alternative to piranha (even though I'm not a piranha fan at all). But they are quite entertaining!

Sorry for the poor quality photo...

I only really like Rhoms, I dont especially like the look or rbps. Id be happy with cichlids if I couldnt have a rhom. I would love to have some of those pure olive green oscars, but I havent seen them since I was a teenager....If I saw some for sale even my Rhom might be looking for a new home since I cant afford a new tank.
