The Poly Compatibility Thread

What I dont recommend are ghost shrimps. They may seem like snacks for big polys but when I tried placing some in my sen's tank (7" & 9") the s next day I saw the nostrils of my sens clipped off. Damn shrimps. They get pretty territorial and my sens were probably poking around too much. Fed the shrimps to my lap after that. Lol.

They dont hit the ground in my tank, and they got devoured when my sen was like 3"

Ghost shrimp are way too expensive to use as a food source. At least around here. My LFS wants about $.39 each for em and my Poly's can scarf down about 50-60 of these guys in about 5 minutes. As such I stick with feeder guppies once every week or two instead of ghost shrimp as a treat because I have several quarantine tanks to keep them in to make sure they do not introduce disease or parasites to my Polys. They only cost me about $.07-$0.10 each depending on who is working at the store. I also find it fun to sit and watch my 3 Poly's and BGK chase down and devour 50-100 guppies over the course of about 20 minutes. Sometimes the eels even get on it if there are some smaller guppies in the mix. But so as not to get too far off topic, here is my compatibility list.

Fish I have had great success with living with my Polys:

Leopord Ctenopoma(he is like best buds with my 10" Senegal, they are always swimming near each other and get along great)

Yellow Tailed Spiny Eels(I have 3 that have been living with my polys since the polys were babies. They hide most of the time, but do a great job of surviving and are left completely alone when they do come out.)

Black Ghost Knife Fish(Has been living with my polys since they were all babies, will head butt polys to get them out of his "spot" but otherwise they all get along great)

Fish that did not work out(most of this was discovered in my newbie days):

Several types of loach (Kuhli, Striata Botia, *smallish* Clown, Golden Dojo)

Bristlenose Pleco (rehomed to a friend due to slime coat sucking)

Chinese algae eater (same issue as pleco)

Mine do fine with Fire eel as long as the eel is the larger fish, I've had a senegal eat an equal sized fire eel, also had a palmas eat a fire eel... But my current fire eel is large and has no problems.

I also forgot to add that I have a Farlowella Catfish that has been in the tank longer than anyone else, and he has never been so much as sniffed at. I have heard of stories with less success but so far I have personally had great luck with him in there with polys for about a year now.

Ive been told since first keeping bichir to not feed them live ghosts because their carapaces can shred their intestines? Small ones I meant, larger ones are fine I've heard. (As in babies not like senegals v ornates)

I attempted introducing a good sized Balzani Geo to my pred comm today. It got chased around and bit at for 10 minutes by the wolf before I took him out, no actual injury just got the hell scared out of him. Way to big to swallow for him but I guess he wanted a bite. Bichir nipped the wolf when he got too close haha mine is pretty chill

IME many things work with polys, but as stated it totally depends on their size. Idk if I agree with all of the stuff in the quote hao posted. I can personally say that my 3" endli tried to choke down a roseline shark as big as itself, and it even took off 1/2 of the tail of an axolotl much larger than itself. Endlis seem to be the worst...

But as for larger ones I've successfully kept many new world and old world cichlids with them, as well as bullhead catfish, spiny eels, bgk, various plecos (yes, even the common ones).

I´ve kept mine in several different setups with almost everything like softshell turtle,Huge oscars, huge femal jag,ctenopomas,F-gars,odoes,cichlas,big clarias cat,Dats,Malabaricus, snakeheads, granulosus cats and many other tankmates.

And i´ve only lost one poly,a wc male lap a couple of weeks ago,my 40+cm endy chewed on it and the turtle ended his misery=(.But unfortunatly my bichirs have eaten fish 10x their own value haha.fish like wc sal,2x dats,4-5x cichlas (wc orino,f1 kelberi and 3-4x mono),channa lucius and so on...
