If all you saw was just Africans look again. I do understand through as they keep breeding like crazy but I like that as some are food and others I sell. I use to have a couple peacock bass I'm their but they are with the other one.

I'm all for mixing fish although not african cichlids with african ones

That is a good idea. I did wash a little tonight and I think it's not going to be too bad to just wash it all. I am thinking even after looking really close that this sand is a little fine for my likings and I'm going to check the next size up. Hard to tell sometimes with a small batch but once I got it wet and cleaned it's a bit too fine in my opinion. So I'll go back and look at the next size up.
Have you thought of making a large "fluid bed filter" like contraption to wash all that sand quickly. It does not have to be water tight as it is going to be used 11 times?

I use very fine gravel it's nice and round so easy on the rays belly and it does not stick to the rays like sand. One flick from them and it’s all gone. The sand got everywhere in all filters and stuck to all the rays. I removed it best thing I did my Rays always look nice and clean and my filters will last longer I am sure.
You can see the fine river gravel in this old shot. I do mix a little coral sand with it to keep my PH around 7.2

I mean mixing africans with South Americans, its just confusing although I do mix monsters hehe

Ya I have heard people using fine gravel. That is an awesome ray. Is that a Pearl?

Well I plan to start off with some cheaper rays I'm not made of money for black rays at this point. I really like marble motoros and I like pearls allot also. Just depending on what I can get my hands on when the time comes and a deal comes my way. I have a friend who breeds normal montoros so might start with a couple of those and build my stock from that. Anyone with free rays can donate. Lol. Or any good deals always pass them my way. I'm a sucker for a deal. I hope to have a good stock of rays in the tank sooner than later. I'm not sure how many I can fit in but o would guess a good few. Lots of water filtration and auto drip to keep water great.

What kind of rays you puttin in?

I just remember all the work I did washing all the sand than having to remove it all a few weeks later. I really liked the look the sand gave but not stuck all over my rays. Just thought I give my comments to one of my biggest aquarium mistakes.
That ray is a SP I am not sure of its blood line. That was taken about two years ago he looks very different now he keeps getting better with age. I now think he must have some flower in him as he's markings are a bit like a flower ray.
I will not highjack this thread but I will post a current pic of him on a thread that I posted when I first got him two years ago or more. Before and after.

Cheers

Post away I asked. Please do. Ya I just really like sand. Key I read is to find a heavier grain sand that does not stick to rays but also won't bother them also.
